Come on, did you really expect me to give you all of the best pieces of literature all at once? I had to give Mclean and Eakin to stock up before the mad rush to buy the books that I recommend. I know you have all been waiting with bated breath, so without further ado, part 2!
Comic/Comedy: The Far Side by: Gary Larson
Because it’s hilarious, that’s why!
Epic: The Odyssey by: Homer (We think)
*See Adventures of Huckleberry Finn* in Part 1
Science Fiction: A Princess of Mars by: Edgar Rice Burroughs
This timeless space opera came from the same man who brought us Tarzan. And no, I’m not talking about Walt Disney. Imagine a society on Mars that is more technologically advanced than Earth, with a myriad of alien species, and it all takes place in the past. Kinda sounds like some other series. A really small franchise, a movie just came out within the last year, called STAR WARS.
Biography: Tuesdays With Morrie by: Mitch Albom
If you didn’t cry and feel enlightened at the same time while reading this book, then you are not human. Moving on.
Thriller: The Da Vinci Code by: Dan Brown
A masterfully crafted tale of suspense that questions our perception of politics, religion, and freedom. Also, Tom Hanks AND Sir Ian McKellan are in the movie so that’s a big plus.
Bildungsroman: The Lord of the Flies by: William Golding
Oh Bildungsromans, the most fun genre to say. Meaning “coming of age story,” they encompass a myriad of stories and nearly every genre, but the best by far is The Lord of the Flies. I mean, if a group of young boys crash landing on a jungle island, slowly breaking down into idealistic factions, and murdering each other isn’t coming of age, i don’t know what is.
Political Fiction: 1984 by: George Orwell
If I didn’t put it on the list, Big Brother would not have been pleased.
Mystery: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Technically a collection of short stories, but you know. Still a book. And what’s better than Holmes taking on the Ku Klux Klan?
Romance: The Princess Bride by: William Goldman
To put it simply, it would have been INCONCEIVABLE if I hadn’t put it on the list. And it gets said a lot, but the book is even better than the movie. And that’s saying something.
Literary Nonsense: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by: Lewis Carroll
Rounding out the list is our favorite opium addicted author with a sketchy personal life. He gave us a beautiful world, filled with interesting characters that mask his disturbing reality. Ah, childhood.
So that’s it! If I forgot a genre or book, please feel free to comment below!
