To Those Who Raised Me
Avery Tingley

I have been lucky enough to have so many amazing role models in my life. Not only am I priviledged enough to have my wonderful parents raise me, but I also have had so many other people involved in making me who I am. Everyone deserves a huge "thank you."

To my grandparents, aunts, and uncles; thank you for the endless sleepovers. Thank you for letting me stay up late and for not telling my parents. Thank you for the shopping trips and unhealthy snacks. Thank you for being people I can always feel comfortable around. Thank you for showing me the beauty in things and also teaching me how to laugh at myself. But most importantly, thank you for giving me a home to escape to and for supporting me as I grow up.

To my friends' parents; thank you for raising the wonderful friends that I am so lucky to have in my life. You have instilled valuable lessons in me through my friends. Thank you for letting me stay at your house and hang out all summer. Thank you for also providing me with a home away from home.

To my family friends; thank you for voluntarily treating me like your own child. Thank you for teaching me about how amazing Michigan State University is and for helping me master Cornhole. Thanks for showing me the value of good friendships. Thank you for having amazing children that have become "siblings" to me. Thank you also for not asking me what I'm majoring in because you know that I don't know. Your love and support means the world to me.

To my parents; there are not enough words in the dictionary to properly thank you for all you've done but I'm going to try. Thank you for molding and shaping me to the person I am today. Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and I am no walk in the park. So thank you for dealing with me for the past 18 years. Thank you for the care packages and text messages. Thank you for loving me endlessly and showing me how to love others properly. Thank you for dealing with all of my problems as if they were your own. Thank you for driving me to school back then and thank you for driving up to school to bring me something that I left at home. Thank you for providing me with amazing siblings. I really can never thank you for everything that you've done but please know how much I appreciate it all.

There are so many people to thank for loving and supporting me. Thank you to everyone and anyone who has been there for me and helped me grow into the person that I am today. You can never have too many role models and I'm blessed to have so many.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
