For starters, if you've never been, go.
So what is the greatest day in Tampa, FL called? Gasparilla.
You may hear people refer to it as "Gaspy" or "Pirate Invasion." These are some of the names commonly used when talking about Tampa’s greatest day of the year. Gasparilla is known for dressing up like pirates, throwing and receiving beads and other 21 and above festivities. It's a huge parade up there next to Mardi Gras. For us locals, Gasparilla is a historical event that brings together the City of Tampa.
During the 18th and 19th Century, a legendary pirate by the name of Jose Gaspar and his crew continuously invaded ships along West Florida. His final attack was on a U.S. Navy warship, which resulted in a very well-known battle. This ended the multiple “invasions” that legendary Jose Gaspar thrived on. So, on the day of the Gasparilla Parade, we are enjoying the festivities and celebrating the conquer of a Pirate who continuously invaded Tampa’s costal imports. Gasparilla is a time to come together as a city and celebrate the wonders of Tampa.
Annually, the people of Tampa get to enjoy the month-long celebration or “invasion.” The main event is a parade that takes place along the beautiful seven-mile Bayshore Blvd. located in South Tampa, Florida. If you do it right, Gasparilla is a wonderful Tampa Tradition.
Here are a couple of things to keep in mind during Gasparilla:
To all New Gasparilla-goers: There are so many ways to have fun and enjoy yourself on this wonderful day. There are also many ways to experience a tragic Gasparilla. Here’s some advice from your fellow students, “Drink lots of water, you have a long day ahead of you.” “As much as you think those high heels boots are cute, don’t”. “Go everywhere in packs, or you’ll never find your friends again”.This all seems scary, but it is the reality of Gasparilla. Uber isn’t an option, you will walk many more miles than you anticipate. Seriously, if you think your only walk is to and from Bayshore, you’re sadly mistaken. You’re going to see more people than you ever have in your lifetime. This isn’t meant to scare you, it’s meant to prepare you.
Just a little advice to everyone attending this crazy event:
HYDRATE. Gasparilla is an event that needs days of preparation. Spend the few days before drinking more water than you ever have. I promise you’ll thank me.
WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES. This is not to destroy your adorably cute outfit. This is for your sanity and so you don’t get left behind. If you decide to swing the other way and not take this advice, you’ll either end up lost or with black souls of your feet.
HAVE A MEETING PLACE. Cell phone service sucks. Tampa is consumed by so many people, almost all cell phone services don’t work. This is by far the worst part of Gasparilla. Take it for what it is, and talk about your plans the night before.
Lastly, HAVE SO MUCH FUN.
To everyone: Gasparilla is going to be one of the greatest days as a fellow Tampanian. While you are there, take lots of pictures, spend way too much time planning your outfit and be with people you enjoy. The parade gets crazy but go with the flow and know that no matter what you’re doing, you’re doing it right. Gasparilla is a day of invasions, partying, walking and fun. Enjoy it, it only comes around once a year.
