Dear person who stole my unofficial assigned seat halfway through the semester,
There I am, walking through campus, looking forward to sitting in the perfect seat I chose for myself on the first day class. Close enough to the front, but not too close. The desk that is so perfectly up against the wall for me to rest my head on the concrete when I haven’t had my coffee yet.
Running a little bit late, I start to power walk to class ready to learn in my perfect seat. I walk in without even the slightest idea that someone else will have stolen my seat right from under my nose.
I walk through the door and begin to walk down the aisle to where my perfect seat is placed. I look up, ready to place my bag down next to it and there you are. There you are sitting. You can’t even look at me because you know what you have done.
You have left me to be my awkward self, standing in front of the entire class, searching for a seat as class is about the begin. I quickly back up out of the aisle and scavenge to find another seat.
I look around to find one seat open. The seat located dead center, first row. As if I hadn’t already experienced enough distress for one day.
Why? Why did you do this to me? What did I ever do to deserve this?
If you do not understand the unspoken rule that once someone sits in the same seat for at least the first two weeks of class, that the seat has been claimed. Do you even go to college? I know you know what you did and just so you know, seat stealers are the worst kind of thieves.
You took advantage of my tardiness and swooped in on the ideal seat. At this point, we are over two months into the semester. Did you really think I wasn’t going to sit in the same place I have been for the past eight weeks?! The seat is clearly unofficially assigned to me. Just because you chose a bad seat on the first day gives you no right to take my perfect one. I mean really, who do you think you are?
To all the people out there who have stolen someone’s seat in the past, think before you sit. Remember the shock you will leave your classmate with and how it will affect the rest of their semester, going to their classes frantically worrying that they will have another encounter with someone like you. A seat thief.
To all the people who have had their seat so viciously stolen, you are not alone. It’s time we take a stand against seat stealers. We’re just trying to make it through the rest of the semester. We don’t need people taking our perfectly placed unofficial seats to add to our stress level.
Sincerely,
Angry victim of a seat stealer
