To The Non-Medical Majors

We are just as important as doctors and nurses.

"If you love and serve man, you cannot, by any hiding or strategem, escape remuneration." Ralph Waldo Emerson

College. Something most people look forward to and are scared of. Choosing a major is a difficult thing for some, and easier for others. I grew up around people who were mainly science and medical majors. However, that is not the path I chose. I chose to be a communication major. Something that I am fascinated with and care about greatly. Why, you may ask?... Because it is something in this world, that is universal. Everyone needs and uses communication.

But, a lot of people like to ask me, "What do you do with a degree in communication?" The answer to that question is, "whatever I wish." My goal is to become a news anchor, and I know that that goal will be attained. You see, my life has been full of traumatic life events, the things I have dealt with are nothing compared to what I can achieve and deal with. So why do people think that us non-medical majors aren't worth giving the time of day, or we won't make any "real" money?.. The answer is simple. Close-minded. No creativity.

Not all of us have the minds to pursue the medical field. Although science is interesting to me, I have never had a true passion for it. I am tired of the negativity surrounded by not choosing a major that isn't a medical one. Why should we be looked down on if we want to be something other than a nurse or doctor? After all, we impact lives too. What do you think the world would be like without accountants, teachers, news anchors, journalists and so many others? It would be a boring, uninformed world. So newsflash, give us some credit. We still have to take some of the same, difficult classes that science majors do. Like I have been told before, if college was easy, everyone would do it.

I decided on my major in my senior year of high school. I was told I was great at writing and interviewing so I decided to pursue a degree in something I enjoyed and found interesting. Not something I was interested in for the money. I find journalism and news fascinating, especially recently with all of the chaos going on in the world. I have been told several times, news anchoring will eventually become unpopular because of the internet and increases in technology. But let me ask this. What do these negative Nancy's really know? Do they have a crystal ball that tells them these things?... I think not.

I know what its like being told you need to pick a major that will make you a lot of money. But money isn't everything. Sure it's nice to have, but having a career in something you're uninterested in doesn't sound like a good time to me. So here is some advice I would like to give to those who have been looked down because they didn't pick a major their parents, spouses or friends didn't like, It's YOUR life, you are in control of your happiness. If they can't get on board, then leave them on the dock. College is about becoming a better you and fulfilling your future careers and lives, not about attaining your parents or friends goals.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
