As the summer reaches the mid-point, thousands of girls entering their university in the fall are considering the idea of rushing a sorority. The idea of going Greek at their university has crossed their mind at one point or another, and schools across the country have opened up their registration for recruitment to begin. As the months of summer dwindle down, the thought has crossed my mind of what kind of girls will be rushing my sorority this fall. Serving on the executive board of my chapter and being an active member for two years, I have gone through recruitment and seen the other side of it as well. So, to all the girls thinking about rushing a sorority this fall, my only suggestion is to do it.
To the girls who are rushing my sorority, I cannot wait to meet you. I have been looking forward to new member recruitment since it ended last fall. Seeing the excitement, but also the slight worry makes me excited as an active member of the chapter because I remember when I felt that way. I remember what it was like coming to the first chapter, and being in awe at how everyone interacted; how I was star struck by senior members because “I was just the new girl”. New members of the chapter make me excited because that means I get the share the love of my sisterhood with you.
Being in a sorority has so much to offer. You get in what you put out. Being in a sorority offers you a multitude of different leadership opportunities, committees to join, events to plan, and things to run. Joining a sorority isn’t just ‘paying for friends’, it’s giving you the opportunity to grow and learn. You’re in college to get experience and to get your degree, so why not make it a fun process?
In just three short months, my sorority, along with the twelve others on my campus, will be welcoming new members. All these new members with bright eyes and eager hearts, all exciting to what Greek life has to offer. Rushing a sorority opens you to a community of people all here for the same goal- to provide leadership opportunities, scholastic achievement, campus involvement, personal growth, and to give back to the community.
I cannot wait to welcome these new members to my chapter because the eagerness of the new members sparks a passion in the already active ones. Seeing the excitement of new members makes the current go back to when they were first rushing, and how emotionally draining yet exciting it was. Going Greek was one of the best decisions in my life that I made; it brought me my best friends, the opportunity to be President of my chapter, it opened me to career opportunities, and most of all it gave me a home at my university.
