An Open Letter to The Friends Who Became Family

To my best friend,

To my brother's best friend,

To my sister's best friend,

To my parents' friend,

These are the names we use to refer to you as, but somewhere over the last few years you lost the title “their friend” and became our family. You came into my life unexpectedly and have made a huge impact. Growing up, friends were friends and family was family, but you broke that barrier. You were a friend that became family in a matter of years. One of the many nights that turned into morning, you left the friend zone and reached a family bond that can never be broken.

No, we are not biologically related. No, we do not share DNA. But that is what makes our relationship so strong. You have had every chance to walk away, but you did not. You could have just stayed with the one family member who welcomed you, but instead, you choose to embrace our whole family. You choose to become a part of this crazy beautiful thing I call family, and I could not be happier that you did.

Life with you is easy, you came into my life and never left. I do not have to worry about childish friendship drama. You are not a friend who just comes and go — you are family and always will be. There is a difference between my regular friends and you, friendship does not begin to define the bond we have.

You have seen my family at our worst and stuck with us to see better days. You became my shoulder to cry on when no family is around. You love me like family and treat me as if we share the same DNA. You have taught me things I wouldn’t have wanted to learn from my real family. I have learned lessons through you that I would not have wanted to learn from anyone else. We have made memories doing things I could not do with my family or just normal friends. The relationship we have is so special it is like being related to my best friend.

Having you in my life made growing up easy. During my childhood, you taught me words I should not have known until years later. You fought with me like my brother would, but it only made me stronger. Now, you are the person I can turn to and tell anything to, while knowing no judgment is involved. You are the one I can call when I am in trouble, and I know you will be there within seconds. You are the reason I look back on the past and smile. Every mistake I made you would assure me that everything was going to be OK. Reminiscing on those talk we have had, you were always right. Everything turned out OK.

I do not know life without you and I do not want too. So please never leave. Stay the same person you are right now. Promise me that 50 years from now, you will still have the relationship and family bond that we have today. My life is better with you than it could ever be without you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
