An Open Letter To The First Month Of College

I’ve come to realize that a lot can happen within a month. You can make or break your life, lose all your friends, gain all new ones, grow up, break down, fall in love, and change yourself. I’ve also realized all these experiences are not as hard to come by as they may seem.

There is no better example of this than the first month of my freshman year of college. Hitting this landmark in my life, I am not reminiscent as much as I am excited for the future, my new life, and the wonderful things it can hold. As I bring this new chapter in my life, I have some things to say to those who mean the most to me.

To Mom & Dad:

I’ve made it. I am here, I have arrived, and I am thriving. I am growing with each step I take and I hope to only be moving closer and closer to my end goal every day. Even if we do not talk every day, you are always on my mind and I love you always.

To my sister:

I hope to only make you and your alma mater proud. I can only hope to make my path as bright as yours was and find my way as gracefully as you did. You are my role model these next four years, as much as you have been my whole life, I love you always.

To my friends from high school:

You will forever be in my heart, no matter how much we talk. I love you all so much, think of you every day, and will never forget the moments and memories we shared. Distance can not separate us, no matter how far, I love you always.

To my roommate:

Here’s to a month, and here’s to eight more. Hopefully they are all this smooth.

To my best friends:

This month would be nothing without you. I have already grown and strengthened myself through you and I cannot wait to see what the rest of our time here holds.

A month can change everything, all for the better, or all for the worst. The first month of college is crucial to growth and is a marker of the next four years to come. I am lucky enough to say I have found my new home in my campus, and I cannot wait to see what the next fours years can bring. As I move in the future I look back on the past chapters with love, and forward to the new chapters with hope and excitement.

Freshman year is the best of many examples of how a month can change your life. Through confidence and kindness, that will be changed only for the better. The first month of college can be that month that changes it all. You can be the one to change it too.

One month can change everything.

One month can make or break your life; use it wisely, and live it strongly. It’s all up to you.

So to the first month of college:

thank you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
