To the Country that has my Heart

No matter the place, somewhere has captivated your heart.

To the Country that has my Heart

We all have that one city or place that has captured our hearts since we first set foot on the ground. The smell of the air and surrounding shops and cars instantly takes your mind to a distant place where you're happy, care-free, and all around at peace.

If you know me, you know that I have a tattoo of Guatemala on my right wrist. This country captured my heart the summer before 8th grade. I was able to go on a mission trip with my mom to serve the women and children down there in the landfill. Since then, I've been six other times. This was the place I was able to take my first mission trip with my sister, and it was there that we both felt a calling on our lives to pursue missions.

Knowing what I do now about the people I encountered, I wish with all of my being that I could take their hurt and poverty and turn it into wealth without fear of the future. But one thing you never really see in these beautiful people is complaining of their circumstances. Sure, there will always be those people who are not happy with where they are and that will constantly complain. But these people see what it means to have absolutely nothing, but have the biggest joy in the Lord.

During one of my trips to Guatemala, we were doing home visits in the city landfill where we are able to minister to the most people. I was in a group with about three other women from my church and we were visiting families around Guatemala City. While doing the home visits, it began to storm. Keep in mind, the grounds to these homes are mostly dirt, and the roofs are made of tin. While it continued to pour, the women in my group began to put on ponchos and rain jackets. I was the only one who hadn't brought any sort of protection from the down pour occurring outside. As I was worrying about myself and how I would stay dry, the family we were with grabbed one of the two blankets they and for their baby and gave it to me to keep me same from the rain.

I had never experienced such generosity and selflessness before this moment, but it will forever be one of the reasons that the beautiful country of Guatemala will always be my first love.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
