Show a little respect and learn how to communicate.

To The Candidates

To the 2016 Presidential Candidates:

Often, when I hear about voting, I hear people say that "we're choosing the lesser of two evils," Now, I do not, by any means, consider myself a politician or an expert in politics. I mean, I did watch a few of the debates, but obviously, that does not make me an expert. That being said, I have a few things to say to the two of you.

First things first, I was honestly shocked while watching the debate. It's clear to me that neither of you has ever taken a communications class. Not even a basic one. Both of you essentially refused to acknowledge the other's opinion. To me, that's a basic thing that everyone (not just politicians) have to know. It's a simple fact of life: other people are going to have a different opinion than you. It's inevitable. Regardless of that, you must acknowledge that the other person has an opinion and you should respect that they have an opinion. For me, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The fact that during the final debate, neither of you would shake the other's hand was shocking to me. It was so disrespectful. Just because you're competitors doesn't mean that you get the right to disrespect one another.

In all honestly, I felt like I was watching children. Completely irrelevant insults were hurled left and right and there was no respect for the opposing candidate. In this election, I essentially feel like I am electing a child into office.

You both have made it very hard for me to make a choice this year. And my biggest problem isn't even my political beliefs. Regardless of what they are, I feel as though I'm being forced to pick between the lesser of two evils. I feel as though I'm choosing immature adults to take office. It has absolutely nothing with my political beliefs and everything to do with my morals. It has everything to do with basic communication and respect. Most importantly respect. I don't know how I can elect into office an individual who doesn't even know what respect is.

Sometimes, I wish I had another option. I feel like a lot of individuals would agree with me on this one. Unfortunately, our voting system does not generally work in favor of third parties. A lot of people will say that voting for a third party is essentially a waste of a vote. I'm honestly at a loss. I don't quite know who to vote for.

So, as the candidates, please do me a favor. Help me out a little here. Learn some respect for not only one another, but every other person out there. And please, try to communicate a little better. It's not cool to interrupt one another every five minutes.

Thanks again,

a concerned citizen

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
