To My Future Child

One day, far from now I can't wait to be your mom.

Dear Future Child...

I have dreamed of you since I was a child... I do not know you yet, as I am 18 and no where near ready for you. But as your mom I want you to know I am here for you.

I am here for you at 2 in the morning when your boyfriend or girlfriend broke your heart. I am here to listen to your tears and reasons why life is so less than satisfactory at the moment and to remind you of why you are special and loved and why life is a gift. Don't think you can't come to my room and lay with me because you can't stop crying yourself to sleep. Don't think I won't cancel my plans to make sure you are okay. You will be all I have dreamed of.

I will be there for the goods and the bads. Every accomplishment you make I will be your biggest fan. Don't think I will ever be ashamed of you no matter the mistakes you make. I am here to teach you, not to judge you for your mistakes, because it is likely I have made close to the same ones. If you ever find yourself halfway through a bottle full of demons and with a boy/girl full of lies, put it down, leave them and call me, don't think I won't come get you and hold you until you fall asleep when we arrive back home. There is NOTHING you can do that will make me love you less.

If you ever feel complete sadness and despair, don't keep the pain to yourself as I did, watching you grow will be my greatest joy and seeing you love life like I do will make all the pain you once felt, worth it. Life is tough, sweetheart, but you are too! I had my time. Your sufferings are mine. If you are ever too sad to get up, just wait, we will drive until you don't want to drive anymore and talk until there are no more words to express your feelings, then we will go back home, put on your favorite movie, and fall asleep knowing I love you with all the love in my heart.

With love,

Your Mom (at 18)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
