Hello Brother,
I know things have been rough lately and that you have been having a few issues and that’s okay. But it’s time for some sisterly advice. I know you are going to do stupid things. You are a high school student that’s what happens in high school and honestly, in college, you will make some stupid choices too. Here’s a thought, though. Stop getting caught doing stupid stuff. I wasn’t as perfect as you think I was in high school. I was the good kid of the two of us for sure but not perfect.
Hang out with your friends but don’t get caught doing anything stupid. One day you are going to wake up and think, "wow what was I thinking when I did that?" And with the path that you are on you may wake up and say, "how did I end up with the record that I have?" "How did I get caught up in the wrong crowd and why did I not think about the consequences of my actions before I did them?"
I know you are going to do stupid things even our parents know that you are going to do stupid things. They get it more than you think that they do. Don’t forget that they were your age once too. They may not understand everything but high school hasn’t really changed that much over the years. Just ask them about their high school stories and you might be surprised at how similar to yours they are. They did stupid things at your age.
You are going to be faced with some peer pressure that every high school student faces at some point. You’ll have a friend or maybe a few friends that smoke weed and they will ask you to try it with them and you will either do it or you will tell them no and possibly lose some friends. But here’s a secret. In ten years you probably won’t even talk to anyone from high school anymore anyway.
You are going to have friends that try and get you to drink with them and you can again either tell them no and you lose friends again or you tell them that you will and get caught doing it and possibly end up with a MIP on your record at 16.
I want you to use any free time or solidarity that you get to reflect upon the choices that you have already made. Any free time you get I want you to use to think about what you want your future to look like and what you need to do to get to that future you see for yourself. Think about the friends that you have now and think about the ones that will make you better and the ones that will bring you down and make it hard for you to have the future that you want to have. Mom, dad, and I all love you and we want what is best for you. We want you to have the future that you see for yourself.
Brother, I love you but I don’t love the choices that you are making. I don’t want you to end up like our biological parents but it looks like that is what is going to happen to you. I want you to start thinking about the things that you do before you do them. I want to feel comfortable with you around your future niece or nephew. I don’t want your future kids to wonder what happened to their dad. You don’t remember what happened to us but I do and I don’t want your kids to go through it. Not saying that I want you to have a kid yet but you know what I am getting at.
Love,
Your sister
