Maybe I've been lucky in my time in the residential halls, but I like to hope that everyone has had an equally positive experience. I can credit this positive experience to the Residence Life staff. My Resident Assistants, Multicultural Advisor, and Residence Hall Director. They all helped me make a smooth transition into college. In my second year here at CMU, they have been a comforting support system. They have encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone, when the result will be beneficial. When I think of how I have enjoyed my time living on-campus, I know I can credit it to the Residence Life staff.

They are here long before move in day, and they have to stay until the last person moves out. They are only a phone call away, and they won't hesitate to reach out if they sense that you need a friend. When you burn popcorn and set off the fire alarm, they are there to make sure everyone gets out safely. Residence Life staff goes above and beyond in order to help give you the best experience in college. They celebrate in our successes, and they are there when you need a shoulder to cry on. They work late nights and long hours, and they do it with a smile on their face. Thank your RA/MA/RHD for all the times they greeted you with a welcoming smile. Thank them for being someone you can talk to when it is most needed. Thank them for listening without judgement. Thank them for going above and beyond. Thank them for being a voice of reason. Thank them for the programs they put on, because they want to see you grow as a person. Thank them for the late nights. Thank them while you can because before you know it, they'll be graduating or moving on to a different job, and you'll realize how much they made a positive impact on your time at school.

To my RAs, my MA, and my RHD, thank you for the time you have invested in making my time on-campus great. Thank you for the programs you put on that challenged me to grow personally. Thank you for the programs you put on that gave me an escape from stress. Thank you for the late nights. Thank you for listening to me, when I just needed someone to listen without judgement. Thank you for the positive impact you leave on not only me, but the impact you also leave on the community.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
