To My Friends Who Transferred

I hope you're at home now.

It started with one, then two, then three, and now all four of you are transferring. I'll start by stating the obvious. I miss you. I miss seeing you every day, I miss spending time with you. This is your new start and I pray every day that you're successful with whatever you choose to do and wherever you choose to go in life. As much as this is a new beginning for you, it's also a new beginning for me.

As you begin your journey at your new school, I begin the same journey at the same school, but I have to start over as well. We used to do things in our little friend group. There was five of us so we could always fit in one car. We ate together, we went places together, we watched movies, etc. All four of you transferred, and it's just me left at our little university, so I get to start over too. This semester is my time to meet new people and make new friends, as it is for you. The only difference, I'm doing it at a place where I'm already familiar, and you're not.

The day that I moved in, I felt more alone than I did on freshman move in day. On freshman move in day, I didn't know anyone, but nobody did and it was the prime time to meet new people and form relationships. This year, everybody already knew everyone, except me. The first few days were so hard for me, because you weren't here with me. It was so different and I didn't know that I liked this place anymore. Rest assured, by the end of the week I realized why I came back. There's still people here, I'm not alone. I still have friends here, and I still have people I can lean on. This is still a place that I can call home, with people that I can call family. I can always visit you guys, I didn't lose you completely. I realized that this new journey for you was also a new journey for me, and that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Whether it be West Chester, HACC, or SUNY, I hope you're all at home now. I hope you love your school as much as I love mine. I hope you feel as "at home" as I always have at Alvernia. I hope that you make new friends and have new adventures. I pray that you make memories that will last a lifetime, like you have made with me.

I already miss seeing you every day, but I hope this change helps you flourish. I wish only the best for you all, and I cannot wait until our paths cross again. I can't wait for you to come visit, and I cannot wait to come visit you. Thank you for making my freshman year in college so memorable. Thank you for being my best friends.

Much love,
the girl down the hall

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
