The corny saying “distance makes the heart grow fonder” usually refers to intimate relationships, but I think it also holds true in friendships. When you’re growing up your closest friends are usually the ones that live closest to you, the ones you go to school with, but after graduation and stepping into the real world, you find your real friends can often be hundreds of miles away. Most friendships break apart once you no longer see each other as often and your lives grow in different directions. Every so often you find that one friend that no distance can separate.
To my best friend that has stayed in contact while being far away, thank you. Life and “adulting” has taken all our time, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is knowing you’re always there. I know when things are going bad I can always count on you for a laugh and some good, brutally honest advice. I don’t have to see you or talk to you every day to know that. You’ll always be my person.
You’ve seen me at my worst. You’ve talked to me during my 3:00 a.m. sobbing phone calls. You’ve told me people you’ve never met aren’t worth my time, simply because you know that they hurt me. Thanks for having my back. It’s hard to text everything that happens in the span of a week, but every time we talk on the phone to catch up we end up telling so many stories at once because everything seems so important for each other to know. We never have to fear being judged by each other, no matter how ridiculous the story.
No matter how far away you are, you’ll always be my best friend. My forever friend. Our song with always bring back memories and all of our sneaky notes we passed will always make me laugh. Even though I may only get to see you during silly Snapchats of singing in the car or daily selfies, it’s enough to remind me that you’re there and you’re alive. Thanks for helping me make serious life decisions, even if it is just helping me figure out what to eat for breakfast. Also, thank you for helping me study and edit my long papers when I’m panicking about school.
Sometimes missing you gets really hard, but it makes me that much more grateful when I see you. And yes, I will always be that person that will cry when I see you. Thank you for reminding me that no matter how far away we may be from each other, it will never change the value of our friendship.
We didn’t necessarily meet under ideal circumstances, but that never stopped us. It didn’t matter how many people tried to break our friendship; we’ve still managed to talk every day. I know I can get mean, and push you away when I’m struggling. Thank you for making me talk anyway. You always believe in me when I can’t, and you hold the hope I lose. Thank you for that, and thank you for being you.
