To my first kiss,
There are so many things we have to thank our first kisses for. And not just the first "first kiss", but all the different kinds of first kisses we have in our lives.
To the first kiss that did not really count because I was five years old and it was just three times on the cheek surrounded by our classmates on the playground at recess. I want to thank you for giving me a story I will tell forever to my kids and grandkids. Thank you for teaching me that our childhood crush will never be forgotten and giggling on the playground with friends while the boys chase us in tag is a memory that all kids need to keep some sense of innocence inside us.
To the real first kiss that happened when I was 13 in the movie theater when the credits started rolling while your mom waited outside in her minivan for us and you smelt like popcorn and nerves. Thank you for making me feel special because you told me I was the prettiest girl in ninth grade before asking permission to kiss me. Thank you for making me feel pretty and not like the awkward ugly girl I thought I was.
To the first kiss that was longer than two seconds at a sweaty dance when we were bumping into each other like stumbling fools and calling it dancing. Thank you for showing me that not all rumors about kissing were true. Like my braces would split open your mouth (false) or making out meant we had to use our tongues no matter what (false). Also, thank you for making me feel wanted and desirable for the first time
And finally to the first kiss that really meant something and truly mattered because it gave me butterflies and made my skin flush and feel like it was on fire yet cold at the same time. I want to thank you for being the first kiss that made me realize that love is going to be the greatest adventure and thrill ride of all. Even though we may not have ended up together, thank you for being the first one to show me what being in love is.
