To My College Friend Group

A thank you letter.

To My College Friend Group
Sarah McKellar

To my college friend group,

I was really nervous about making friends in college. I have pretty much had the same friend group since middle school, and it was the first time that we all were really going to be splitting up and heading to different areas of not only our state, but the East Coast. I’ve never had a hard time making friends, but I knew that college would be totally different. Luckily, I pretty quickly found a great group of friends in which I have found my voices of reason, the older brother and sister I’ve never had, and most importantly, my best friends.

I don’t even know how we all came about being friends. I know that one day, I was sitting on the floor in our typical hangout room, all listening to Vampire Weekend and doing our respective assignments when I just realized how lucky I am to have you guys in my life. I don’t know where else I could find a group of completely amazing people who really just...get me.

We’ve all had our ups and downs this year. We all have spent nights curled up with ice cream watching Grey’s when we got our hearts broken and our emotions were complete shit shows. We’ve had little arguments here and there, especially when we get into Nerf gun wars and hit each other with the bullets. But mostly, I’ll remember all of our inside jokes and the weekend when we all really reaffirmed our friendship: Halloween. I’ll never forget all taking Macroeconomics and totally struggling together. I feel so completely comfortable with you, and without you, my freshman year would have been very different.

I am so excited that I get to continue being friends together next year by living together. It will certainly be interesting living with my best friends, but I’m so excited to see where it takes our friendship.

I am going to miss you all so much this summer as we split up and go back to our respective roots all over the East Coast. But know this, the dog pictures, memes, and group messages will not end just because we aren’t together daily. But really, thank you so much for everything this year and making me realize how important it is to have a great group of friends.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
