To My Baby Brother As He Graduates

I am so proud of you!

Dear Zach,

I'm slightly freaking out over the fact that you're less than a month away from your high school graduation. To say that I'm proud of everything you have accomplished and the man you have become would be a significant understatement. From the days when you used to pull my hair and follow me everywhere I went ,to today, where we see each other only when I'm home for school breaks, I have loved you with my whole heart. Though I don't say it, I hope you know it's true. You're my only brother (and only sibling), and I would do anything for you. The truth is, I don't think I would have survived this long without you.

Still, I'm a bit shocked that you are actually going to college. I know you're smart, and I knew you would be accepted to many schools, but I never really thought about the day you'd decide where to move off to. Now that your high school career is coming to a close, I just wanted to say that you are the best brother in the whole world, and I am so glad we're past the hair-pulling, eye-poking, scream at each other for no reason days. Those were rough, but I'm still glad they happened.

Sometimes my appreciation for you gets lost in translation. Before you leave the nest, I'd not only like to tell you that, yes, I will miss you, but also to be careful. Take care of yourself, and trust people cautiously. If you feel like you're drowning with school work, take a breath, step back, and look at the big picture because in the grand scheme of things, college is just another stepping stone that matters a lot more when you're living through it than when it's over. In ten years, it really won't matter where you went or whether you handed every homework assignment in, whether you went to all the "cool" parties, or even what your GPA is. It matters, but not forever so don't get hung up on the little things.

You can do anything you set your mind to. Stay humble, be kind, and always, always do your laundry. All joking aside, I hope you discover more of yourself through the highs and lows, and that you learn important life lessons along the way. Don't ever think twice about calling or texting me if you need something. If you need a secret keeper, I'm here. If you need a friend, I'm here. If you need advice, I'm here. If you need to escape your roommate(s), I'm here. College is tricky, but if you learn from your mistakes, appreciate all that is thrown at you, and take advantage of every opportunity possible, you'll make it out on the other side. Most importantly, think before you speak, and read before you think.

Best wishes for a prosperous and valuable four years at UConn!

Love,

Taylor

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
