Dear Long Distance Best Friends:

We met a couple years back because of fate. We were originally strangers. Each of us thought the others were weird, obnoxious, and outright crazy. We couldn’t imagine ever being friends, let alone best friends. But, I’m so glad we put our judgments aside because if we hadn’t, I would have never met my best friends.

Most people are lucky enough to have their best friends in the same state either an hour apart or next door, but we’re all spread throughout the country. I’ve always believed the strongest friendships are the ones in which you have all obstacles against you, but you still make it work. Whether it was our late night group Skypes or the group chat, we’ve made the best friendship out there.

Our group chat is the number-one reason I even use my phone. Everyone’s hourly updates on their lives are always entertaining even when it’s about super intimate and detailed, disgusting stories. I know every little detail about you all, and vice versa because of our constant updates. Even with all the fun and laughter, we can (sometimes) be super serious too. You guys are the ones I have deep, meaningful conversations with about the world and about life. You help open my eyes to other opinions and sides.

You’ve taught me a lot about people and my myself. Our friendship has shown me what dedication, honesty, loyalty, and friendship truly looks like. For myself, you’ve been there through it all. You have been my rocks since the day I first met you. You’ve been the ones who can brighten my day no matter what--even with a simple text. You know what to say and when to say it. You support me in every decision, even when you don’t agree. You encourage me no matter what. You are always the only ones to be brutally honest when I’m being unrealistic. You’ve broken me down and toughened me up. And I cannot thank you enough.

Everything we do over text and FaceTime, most people get to do with their best friends in person. We have to wait months before we share those memories, but when we do, it’s amazing. From the moment someone makes up a plan to see each other, nothing else seems important. Our excitement results in numerous countdowns, reminiscing on our past adventures, and making crazy plans for when we’re together again. The screaming, jumping, and obnoxious behavior in several different airports are always the beginning to our new adventure. Even when we can only be together for a few days, it’s still the best time of the year.

Some people go through life not having someone to call their long-lost sister, but I’m lucky to say I have all of you.

Sincerely,

One member of the long distance best friend group

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
