To be an old soul is a rare and precious gift. Not only does it become a feature that defines you, it molds your way of life. Some find it a captivating quality, while others are simply confused as to why you choose to read the New York Times hard copy every Sunday.
It’s hard to be someone who appreciates the charms of the past in such a fast-paced world. Your heart breaks a little when you realize many people your age have no idea who Charles Brown is. What’s even more painful is the lack of true, genuine love shown to others nowadays.
To be an old soul is to appreciate the beauty in the small things, to appreciate the delicate charm in something seemingly lackluster.
People are so often too busy rushing to get on with their day that they forget to quite literally stop and smell the roses. Life is full of beauty; it’s on every street corner. Perhaps it's not a rose garden but maybe it’s an elderly couple crossing the street hand-in-hand, or children laughing and playing tag. Beauty is lurking everywhere and can be so enchanting; those of us who are old souls take the time to embrace it.
To be an old soul is to be swept away in the classics. Music heals and makes you feel, so listen to quality music.
Every radio station in this day and age is playing some sort of rap or pop song that over sexualizes women, praises drugs and alcohol, and is full of profanity. What happened to the age of Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Etta James? Where has the soul in music gone? These questions pass through the brain at least daily of those of us who are considered to be an old soul. All we want is music that makes us feel, makes us smile and can be waltzed to.
To be an old soul is to become entangled in the words and sentences that make up classic literature pieces. So engrossed in these works of art that time seems to slow down or even stop.
There is something so captivating about classic novels like “Pride and Prejudice” or “Gone With the Wind.” They have depth, drama, romance, and heartache but are so beautifully crafted that they seem to be works of art. Masterpieces if you will.
To be an old soul is to yearn for love. True, undying love.
In my mind, when I think of love, I think of the relationships of the past. Relationships that withstood time, distance, war, economic troubles and everything in between. Marriage, in the olden days, was truly sacred. People didn’t give up on one another, they poured their hearts and souls into their relationship. They put in work, something that is so rarely seen in today’s world.
To be an old soul is a blessing and a unique quality to be cherished.
