Here's the great thing about social media - just because someone posts something, doesn't mean you have to read it.
One of my favorite things to do when I see an article with a lot of shares, and one that is definitely more controversial, is read the comments on the bottom. Some people applaud the writer while others bash the article. However, there are the select few that bash Odyssey altogether, complaining about college students constantly sharing stories and the lack of hard-hitting news.
Well, college students share these stories because they're proud of what they write. It's like any other content-based platform, you write an article and then you share it. This is how Odyssey gains a following. If you don't want to read it, no one is holding a gun to your head. If you want to scroll right past the political commentaries or social criticisms, feel free. We care about as much as Morgan Freeman does.
As for the "hard-hitting" news criticism, that's not what Odyssey is entirely about. We're not the NY Times or the Washington Post. If you want to read
So, if you're looking for some objective, purely fact-filled piece, you're clicking on the wrong link. These articles hold our opinions, opinions that you just may not agree with.
With that being said, we are required to fact check and make sure the information we're providing is accurate. We're not going to write an article on Hillary Clinton being a liar...oh wait, that is true (and yes, this is my opinion.)
(Don't worry, none of her pantsuits were injured in the making of this cartoon.)
Okay, another example then. We're not going to write an article about Hillary Clinton being a proven Nazi because we all know that she isn't. We're not going to push stories that aren't true.
But just because we write something you disagree with, that doesn't mean that we're wrong.
And as for leaving comments, you can criticize us and insult us all you want, but you're probably not going to get a public reaction. Keep in mind that if you comment something completely vulgar, we can't always defend ourselves.
For some of you, that makes you even more eager to make hateful comments, but just know that an argument is not going to ensue, even if we really, really, really want to respond. We will, however, be thinking this:
Read it, don't read it, your decision has no impact on our lives. Zero. Zilch. None. If you can't handle having something pop up on your newsfeed that you don't want to read or see at all, then you should probably just delete all of your accounts now.
Odyssey is not just doing well, it's expanding. So get ready to have even more articles coming your way.
I can feel your excitement.
