As festival season came upon us, the reminder of how to attend festivals and not appropriate cultures came through a flood of articles, tweets, Facebook statuses, etc. At this rate, bindis, Native American headdresses, and henna should be left alone. So can someone tell the writers of mainstream magazines to stop crediting the Kardashians and the Jenners with "inventing" trends that have existed within the black/latinx communities for YEARS now?
Kylie Jenner recently posted this picture on Instagram and of course, our favorite fashion magazines had to share the latest trend Kylie Jenner "started".
As if my mom didn't take her high school graduation photos with hoop earrings on in the 80's. Statement jewelry is a part of black culture, hip hop culture, and latinx culture but they are not credited for these things. Women of color have been called "ghetto" for wearing hoop earrings but once a Kardashian/Jenner does it, it becomes trendy.
Why? Is it because it's less threatening to you when it's on a white woman?
Let's go down the list of things the Kardashians/Jenners have appropriated:
1. "Boxer Braids"
They're not "boxer braids" they're called cornrows and it's a protective style many black women have experienced discrimination in the workplace for wearing.
2. "Overdrawn/lined lips"
Let's thank the Mexican American "cholo/chola" subculture for this trend. They've been wearing brown lip liner before applying lipstick for years now with no credit being given.
3. Kylie Jenner's textured ponytail at NYFW

The list can go on and on for the times the Kardashians/Jenners have appropriated cultures. There's a huge difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation and they just don't get it. They love black culture, style, even date black men but continue to remain silent on issues that effect the black community. When Amandla Stenberg called out Kylie Jenner for her cultural appropriation and remaining silent on issues that affect black lives, she was met with "go play with Jaden or something" as a response.
This is who you look up to? Yeah, not I.
