Going to your very first internship can be a nerve-wracking thing, especially if you've never had a job before. If you're like me, you'll probably just feel so clueless and scared that you won't be able to get any sleep the night before. But I promise you, it's not as bad as it seems. Here's a few things that I've learned during my first week at my internship class.
1. Always be on time! Showing up late or failing to inform your boss/professor that you're going to be late or that you can't come in that day, will not make a good impression. The worst part isn't that you're unable to be there; they are more frustrated if you don't tell them.
2. Make sure to dress properly. If you're supposed to dress in business attire, especially for girls, make sure you have the right clothes. Invest in blazers, dress pants or long skirts, and COMFORTABLE business shoes. Also don't wear tops with v-necks or low neck lines.
3. Don't be afraid to ask questions! This is an internship and your boss/professor understands that you won't know how to do everything right off the bat. It's made to be a learning experience and they will appreciate that you're making the effort to learn or understand something.
4. Don't show weakness (and don't confuse asking questions with weakness). If your boss/professor gives you a challenging task or assignment, don't back down! Show them that you are up for the challenge. Yes, it may be difficult and you may feel lost or scared, but just do your best! They're just testing your skills and want to see if you have the motivation to try.
5. Take it seriously! An internship has the ability to kick-start your career if you take it seriously and showcase yourself professionally. Often times your internship can also connect you to your future boss and other businesses that are looking to hire. It's a great way to get your name out there and build your resume.
6. Lastly, it's OK to be nervous but think of it as a growing experience. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect. It's OK to feel scared but I guarantee that by the end it won't be nearly as scary as you thought it would be.
