Tips For Incoming College Freshmen

College is the time to try and figure out the rest of your life. Entering such a crucial part of your life at only 18 is intimidating and a little scary. Here are some tips to remember before leaving for college in August.

1. You don't have to be best friends with your roommate

This one sounds weird. But, it's not required that your first roommate has to do everything with you. It's important to have a roommate you get along with, but remember to make your own friends during the first few weeks.

2. You don't have to be best friends with your entire hall

Residence halls for first year students are designed to try and make the transition easier into college. It's great to meet people around you, but don't just limit yourself to hanging out with the people in your hall. Convenience can make or break friendships.

3. Don't date the first person you come across

College isn't about finding true love. It's about preparing for a career. Just because you come across someone you enjoy spending time with, doesn't mean you have to date him/her. Enjoy college as much as you can.

4. Get involved

Getting involved not only looks great on a resume, but also helps find people with similar interests. Taking what you learn in the classroom and applying it outside of the classroom will pay off four years down the road.

5. Go to your professors' office hours

Even if you don't need the extra help, professors love getting to know their students. Some professors will even give extra credit for stopping by.

6. Eating alone at the dining hall is OK

Sometimes grabbing a quick lunch or dinner with a group of people is hard. It's OK to go eat alone. No one will judge you, no one will make fun of you. You may even make a new friend or two by doing so!

7. Take classes seriously

We all know the first year is usually made up of general requirements. However, your first year will be the foundation of your GPA and it's a good idea to start your GPA off high!

8. Early classes are not as easy as they may seem

You were able to survive high school early mornings. But college is a whole new ball game. 8 a.m.'s are not easy. In college you'll experience all nighters, not a great idea to start off college with an 8 a.m.

9. Have fun!

College is supposed to be the time of your life and four years will fly by! Don't let it be ruined by pointless drama and heartbreak.

Make these next four years count!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
