Freshman year can be tough. You're on your own for the first time in your life. You have to figure out a new place, new people, and how to manage your time wisely. And it's just as fun and exciting as it is intimidating. Here are just a few tips every freshman should know to have a great first year:
1. Be open minded.
Don't be closed off to change and meeting new people! We all picture college being a certain way, but sometimes plans don't always work out. That's okay! Be open minded to change, meeting new friends, trying new things, joining different activities, and being yourself.
2. Find your people.
Find the people who are always going to be there. Be open to making new friends always. Sometimes friendships die, and sometimes they blossom. Finding the people you want to surround yourself with will help you with the adjustment to college. Everyone wants to make new friends and be a good friend. College friends are life long friends that will stay in your heart forever.
3. Join clubs!
Build your resume; just because you are a freshman doesn't mean you can't be a leader. Clubs are a great way to keep you busy and a good way to make friends.
4. Go out!
Going out and having fun in your life won't destroy a GPA. People can have fun and do good in school! It's very much manageable as long as you set your priorities straight; responsibilities before fun.
5. Make mistakes.
It's okay to make mistakes; even though your in college most freshman are only 18, and being 18 and on your own just calls for making stupid mistakes. They happen. Learn, live, and move on. Don't dwell on what could have been and keep moving forward!
6. Ask for help.
It's okay to ask for help, and most of the time it will be given when asked! Your professors want you to succeed as well as make sure you know the course material. Go into office hours if you are struggling, it makes the world of a difference!
7. Don't forget about your family.
Your family is so important in getting through the stress and the loneliness of your freshman year. Make sure they know you appreciate them, and even though you're not living in the house, you'll still think of and love them. If you miss them, call them! Sometimes a phone call from your family can uplift your mood for the whole day.
