The 2019 sailing season has now begun. Is it starting to itch with you? Will this be your season? Are you finally going to realize that long-held wish for your own ship ... or a larger ship? YES?! Then read on, because we have 5 TIPS for if you are planning to purchase a boat, so that your 'new' ship will not let you 'shipwreck'!
TIP 01: Tune your boat to your sailing area!
The most important thing when buying a ship is sailing. Where do you want to sail with your boat? Look at an open lake, you can sail beautifully, but a sloop is a lot less interesting. If, for example, you want to sail through all the canals, then that sloop is perfect and a sailboat a lot more illogical. Fast sailing is another thing. On the big rivers this is usually allowed .... If you want to sail on the Maas or the Rhine then a fast sailing ship is a great choice. If your plan is to explore the Wadden Sea, look for a boat that can fall dry. You actually buy an experience on a certain water ..... let the boat depend on that chosen experience and not the other way around. Trust us: you will be deeply unhappy with your thick 1000HP Speed Cruiser if you live on Sneekermeer!
TIP 02: See who you are going to sail with!
Are you a companion or just a loner? Do you want to go out on the water with your whole family or just with your best friend? The composition of your sailing crew naturally determines the boat to be purchased. For example, if your family consists of 5 people, a small open sailboat is not really handy .... Conversely, this is also the case, imagine you prefer to sail alone .... do not buy a 12-meter long two-mast or motor cruiser. It may all sound like an open door, but we all too often see crowded boats on the water, and if something happens to it, it is immediately wrong. Your social life should play a role in the purchase of your boat.
TIP 03: Determine what this new hobby is literally worth to you!
When purchasing a boat, it does not stop financially. Determine exactly what you want to spend on your boat at most. Suppose you have € 10,000 and found a boat that fits where you are going to sail and ..... your friends can also all. What do you want to spend on that boat every year? A wooden boat costs less to purchase but much more to maintenance. If you buy a boat that is too large to always put on a trailer, you will lose mooring fees. Insurance costs more with a speedboat than with a sailboat. The boat that you buy immediately determines the amount of money you spend per year. Buying a cheap boat can be an expensive choice if you sail with it. Therefore determine your sailing budget! By the way, don't forget to take the monthly repayments if you want to / have to finance your boat !!!!!!
TIP 04: What are you looking for in water sports?
What type of watersports enthusiast are you or do you think you are? Are you active and are you looking for a boat to enjoy doing or are you more of a real peace seeker? There are sailing yachts on which you have to work hard and there are sailing yachts that calmly wind their way over the water. The same applies to motor yachts. Do you want to steer actively and thunder through waves or just sit very calmly on the aft deck with a glass in the sun?!?!? Everything is possible, but can you do everything? Think carefully about what you want to do with your boat before selecting one. Even if you want to sail, for example, there are still choices to make ... are you going away with your boat for a few days or do you just want to spend an afternoon on the water in good weather? The correct determination of what you are looking for in water sports ensures that you purchase the right type of boat for yourself. TIP 05: How much time do you have?
This is also a nice one! Are you a super busy businessman / woman who has a hard time freeing up something but still wants to relax on the water now and then?! Then choose a boat that also takes little time. The aforementioned wooden boat is beautiful, but it takes a lot of maintenance time. A polyester sloop, on the other hand, is immediately ready to sail and requires virtually no maintenance. If you are lucky enough to be able to make the budget set in TIP 3 very LARGE, you can outsource things like maintenance. You can see that time is also MONEY in water sports. Think carefully about this when purchasing your boat. Nothing is as sin as owning a boat that is wasting away due to a lack of time!
