Being alone in the city can be very hectic, especially when taking the subway. I was just in New York City and had to take the subway. It's a great transportation system that gets people from one place to another. However, it requires people to be observant and aware of their surroundings because there are people that will try to pick-pocket and steal.
- Know where you're going!
This may seem obvious, but there might be changes in the schedules due to construction. Look at a map or apps such as New York Subway, Google Maps, or Apple Maps. Look at the street names posted on top of the stop or listen to the conductor.
- The subway doesn't stop at your exact location.
It sucks when you have to walk for more than a mile to your location. At least there's taxis and Ubers to take you. Know your cross streets when asking for directions too. No one really knows where certain places are unless you give them cross streets.
- The $9 subway Metrocard is always a good option.
It can take you to three or four places. Don't worry! All subway stops always have a kiosk to refill your card. Just don't lose it and you'll be good to go.
- Keep your belongings close to you.
Yes, people want to get to where they need to go, but yes they will take every opportunity to steal. Some people tie their shopping bags together or put plastic bags over their purchases. Think creatively when trying to secure your stuff.
- Don't stare at people.
Everyone has a straight face in the subway and staring at people isn't just creepy, but it also sends a message to be aware.
- Swiping your card to enter the subway doesn't always work the first time.
The machine always has a malfunction or the balance may not be sufficient. It usually takes a few tries, but you'll get it eventually. Remember that the black stripe on the back of the card is always facing towards you.
- Sometimes there's reception, sometimes there's not.
Depending on which subway you're taking, some include wifi (finally!). Make sure you take care of calls and texts first before hopping down the subway.
- Always take the edge of the seats if it's very crowded.
Rush hour happens during the afternoons so people are rushing in and out. Depending on your stop, choose your seat or spot wisely because you'll be constantly pushing and brushing off people every time the subway stops.
- Follow the rules.
Again, another obvious one. Eating and drinking on the subway can lead to a huge mess since the subway makes sharp turns and travels fast. People still don't follow this and leave a huge mess for the janitors to clean up.
- Look at the signs on the top of the station.
They are a huge lifesaver and are very colorful, making it easy for people to find their way around the city.
Have fun and stay safe!
