Writer's block. The most dreaded thing writers can possibly think of. It is a beast unlike any other and successfully conquering it varies from person to person. There are a lot of different ways to get over, under, through and around writer's block. The only problem is that it's easier said than done. Here are a few ideas to help you conquer your writer's block.
1. Stay Focused
Put your phone down and get those headphones out to block out all the other noise around you. It is much easier to scroll through something on your phone than it is to sit down and power through whatever it is you're writing. Eliminating distractions can be just what you need to really get yourself into the feeling and mindset of writing.
2. Take a break
Sometimes just stepping away can be what's best, especially if you've already been at it for hours. Stand up, stretch, take a walk, clean something, take a little while to play a video game, do something that gives your mind a chance to relax and think about something else. Getting away from the blank screen won't do you any harm. Coming back with a little bit of a different perspective can keep your mind open about what you're writing.
3. Don't stop trying
Stopping is what will ultimately halt your progress and keep you in the rut you're stuck in. Try different things. Open up a new document specifically for all the different things you want to try and figure out which one you want to use. If none of them tickle your fancy then keep going. As long as you're writing something you'll have what it takes sooner or later.
4. Try freewriting
Freewriting is a good way to loosen up. Work on something else for a little while. Find a fun prompt and just let your mind do whatever it wants, write whatever you feel like writing at the moment. Again, as long as you're writing something you can move forward. Brainstorm a few ideas for other projects or maybe start a new project (A small one as not to distract too much from the original) altogether. This can help keep your brain moving and thinking while not stressing out about what you're suffering blockage from.
5. Stop trying to get it perfect
This is probably one of the hardest things to do. When you write you don't have to get it right on the first go. That's why we can save multiple copies and also what we have a delete button for. You're allowed to be general and you don't have to go directly from point A to point Z in that order. You're allowed to jump around, fill in the gaps as you go back over it. Write what you think will work the best for you. You can always go back and edit something or add more.
