1. College is a blast, but make sure to get your assignments done before going out and having fun.
You don't wanna be at Northgate with a research paper hanging over your head.
2. Q-Dropping a class does not make you a failure.
Trust me, even if it's supposed to be an "easy class" and you're struggling, it's okay to save your GPA than take that D or F.
3. Take harder classes over the summer or online.
Save yourself a headache. There's nothing wrong with getting extremely hard classes done at a community college.
4. Halloweekend.
Coming into college, I didn't realize that Halloween was something that lasted from Thursday to Tuesday. Beware of the constant parties for 6 days.
5. It's really a small campus.
Honestly, I see people that I know all of the time. You truly won't feel like it's a huge campus once you start meeting people.
6. Make friends so you aren't eating alone.
Sbisa is a large dining hall. There's a designated corner for eating alone, but try to make friends so that doesn't happen.
7. Smoothie King is more addicting than Starbucks.
This will be you when you use all of your dining dollars on smoothies. Trust me.
8. Bikers think that they own the road and will not stop for you.
It's not the cars you have to worry about but beware of those bikes.
9. Buy rainboots, an umbrella, and a rain jacket.
It will randomly start pouring on you in College Station. Be prepared. Always.
10. Buy a rug or anything to make you feel at home.
You're going to be in this dorm for 8 months, so make it somewhere that you're going to enjoy spending time in. I got a rug for $10 at Ross and it's the best decision I have ever made.
11. Know yourself.
If all of your friends are taking 16 hours and you're a 12 hour kind of person, that's okay. Don't over-work yourself just because you're in college and feel like you have to. Take care of yourself.
12. You become who you surround yourself with.
If you surround yourself with partiers, more than likely you will party too. If you surround yourself with Breakaway-going, Jesus-loving, down to earth people, the chances of you becoming one are pretty high. Don't be naive to think that your environment does not influence you.
13. Take notes before going to class so you know what is going on.
Trust me, it's a lot easier to sit in class and already know what the lecture might cover. Or it might not. But at least you're understanding the subject just a little bit better.
14. Find a good studying spot.
I know on the tour that they romanticize Evans, but there are so many places other than the one library to study. Try Quadbucks, Ash, Hulllabaloo CLC, the 24-hour lounge, outside on the East Quad, or Langford. If you're feeling really adventurous, you can always go out to the Vet school and find a spot there too. Or the MedSci library. The possibilities are endless but work on figuring out what works for you so that you're the most productive.
15. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions.
If you have a question in class, ask your professor.
16. After the first round of tests, adjust your studying habits.
The first round of tests will be the hardest and probably your worst grade. Don't sweat.
17. Don't listen to the voice in your head telling you to take that 8 a.m. class.
"But I did it in high school every day" Yes well, this is college. And it is harder.
18. Be spontaneous and say "yes" to crazy things.
For example, my friends and I have fun 5 am trips to IHop and 1 am trips to Whataburger or 10 pm trips to Lake Bryan. Do fun and crazy things (within reason) sometimes just for the heck of it.
19. High school is NOT the best time of your life, but still, enjoy these last few months.
And maybe break out into song or something. The possibilities are endless.
20. Lysol EVERYTHING when you start to get sick.
I'm not kidding. Being sick in college sucks. Do everything you can to prevent it.
21. EmergenC will save your life.
But make sure to add water first.
22. Bring a water bottle with a filter.
College Station water is gross. Find a way to filter it.
23. Clean often. Dorms can get disgusting quickly.
It's such a small space. A dirty dorm will end up making you feel claustrophobic.
24. Compromise with your roommate(s) is key.
You truly don't want to spend all of your time arguing with your roommate(s). Make sure to set some ground rules and compromise on things.
25. Do nice things for your roommate occasionally.
My roommate brought me a bundt cake once before a big test. It's the little things that go a long way.
26. Get involved.
Even if it's with a church, a friend group, or a club. Do something.
27. Buy a mattress topper.
Again, you're here for 8 months. Make sure you're getting quality sleep.
28. Paper towels are extremely handy.
We use them as plates, napkins, somewhere to put paintbrushes, quite literally anything. I promise that you will use them very often for the most random things.
29. Buy breakfast food to eat in class.
Most professors are pretty cool about eating in class, so you might as well bring breakfast and some coffee.
30. Substitute candles with an essential oil diffuser.
This is probably one of the best ways to relax in college. Turn all the lights off in your dorm, have your essential oils going, and I promise you may feel a little more at peace
31. Use the bus.
If you live on Northside, route 1 stops at the water tower and will take you to the rec center. It's the 3rd stop. You're welcome.
32. Impulse buys are okay sometimes (within reason).
Sometimes you just gotta say "yes" to that playdough or that cookie. Treat yourself.
33. You are still going to be happy without being in a FLO.
They get over-hyped sometimes. So if you don't get into a FLO, there are so many other things that you can do and get involved in.
34. Walk your class route before classes start.
Don't be the freshman who waits until the first day of classes to actually find the buildings.
35. Learn to enjoy coffee.
I don't know how many college kids survive without it, so you might as well develop a taste for it now.
36. Venmo.
I personally didn't know about this app until getting to college, but it's the best way to pay people back.
37. That class group chat will be a lifesaver.
Sometimes those things hold reviews, quizlets, and rants about the professor. It's truly a gold mine in there. (Shout out to my HIST 226 pals.)
38. Go to Fish Camp.
You might not know what's going on the entire week, but you should go anyways. It's truly a blast and there's nothing quite like it.
