New Year's resolutions are something that not many of us take advantage of, but we all know we should. It doesn't make much sense why we don't, as it is not that much work. It's just looking back on the previous year, and choosing something we'd like to improve upon in the new year. It doesn't have to be a whole "new year, new me" situation -- maybe just a little something that helps us be a better version of ourselves. Some of us make resolutions but have trouble following through. After a few months, we either forget about it or just don't want to do it anymore. As 2016 is quickly approaching, here are a few tips that may help make accomplishing your resolution a little easier.
1. Make it realistic.
At one point, we have all seen a Facebook post or Instagram picture about how someone is going to cut junk food completely out of their diet. Firstly, when we see these it makes us feel pretty bad for not making such a bold resolution (or any at all). But in all honestly, are these drastic resolutions really possible? Coming from a person who loves junk food, no, it's not. Try to pick something that will have a positive effect, but isn't so completely unrealistic it's unobtainable.
2. Tell your friends and family or find a partner in crime.
The best way to stay motivated to accomplish something is to find someone to do it with you. This way you can keep each other motivated throughout the year. If you can't find anyone who shares your resolution, simply tell those around you to help you through it. This way when you feel like quitting, you'll have someone there to remind you that you can do it.
3. Set goals for yourself.
Each month set a goal that will help you accomplish your resolution. If your resolution is to eat less junk food, allow yourself a treat a day and each month lessen the amount of treats you eat. Anything along those lines that gives you a sense of accomplishment each month can be incredibly helpful.
4. Use technology to help you.
Turns out the App Store doesn't just have addicting games. Instead of buying the next saga of Candy Crush, try downloading something like Headspace, a personalized app that helps you clear your head and keep your eye on the prize when you're feeling down.
5. Just do it.
In the end, no matter how many tips I or anyone else throws at you, the only person who has control over actually doing it is you. If you spent time deciding on a resolution, chances are it is really something you want to do. In the wise words of Shia Labeouf, "Just do it!"
