Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

A perspective on the concept of time in our daily lives.

Writing is such a versatile action for me and it contains so much emotion. Sometimes I write because I am so angry that I could cry, other times I write because I am inspired and happy, and sometimes I write because I have to. Lately, the latter has been my biggest challenge.

If I take a step back and look at why my writings have not been as strong and moving as I like them to be, I realize time plays a huge role. At this point in my life, my schedule is hectic and chaotic and if it wasn't for iced lattes with fun flavors, I don't know how I would make it through the week.

Here's where writing gets weird. At this point, I can make this article go one of two ways. I can talk about writing, which seems to be a main point, or, I can discuss the influence of time. Two very different angles.

For today, I choose time.

Time is a weird concept: it can either fly by or drag on, there's not enough of it or there's too much of it, I can go on. Lately, time flies and I cannot seem to get enough of it.

I constantly am breaking my schedule down by the hour and at some points, by the minute. It's exhausting, but oddly motivating. With everything in my life being so scheduled and so detailed, incorporating all of my needs and wants into the day requires a lot of organization and determination. I'm one of those people that hates having a never-ending to-do list (but I know that with being an adult, it basically comes with the territory).

This is where my small epiphany occurred. I am so scheduled and involved to the point where some days, I have no idea what day it is. I'll make tiny errors and I'll get anxious because I focus on the clock and timing. I get so worried about accomplishing everything in a certain amount of time, that I lose the amount of passion and dedication put into each work. Quote unquote, I don't have time for it.

Upon this epiphany, I have decided to focus on slowly but surely tackling all of my to-do list. Some days, this means I write out everything I have to do for the day. For example, eat breakfast, go to work, eat a snack, go to class, do an assignment, so on and so forth. Other days, I make my list and set a schedule. My homework assignment that is due on Tuesday does not need to be done on Friday night, but the over-achiever and hater of never-ending to-do lists wants that assignment to be done and over with. On these days, I keep telling myself that being in the moment and taking care of myself is just as important as making a check mark and completing my assignments. So, I'll add things I want to do: do an extra workout, watch Netflix for a couple hours or take a cat-nap.

Set schedules and deadlines are incredibly important, but don't get too far ahead. Take a rest on a Friday, schedule for the future and most importantly, schedule time for you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
