The punk rock genre is easily the throwback genre of our generation. Although these songs were popular when we were in elementary school, they are still just as fun, if not more, to listen to as we hit our college years.
Music is an ever-growing part of our generation. Music festivals attract millions of people every year, while albums turn platinum and end up in the houses of 100 million fans all over the world. From EDM, to reggae, to classic rock, the number of genres is increasing every day. Although there is no universal genre that is generally agreed upon as the best music of our time, throwbacks from the punk era of our childhood get kids stoked on growing up in the time of catchy lyrics and exciting melodies. Turning on any punk classic from the late '90s to mid '2000s, will have every kid born in the '90s singing at the top of their lungs.
"Blink 182" is a perfect example of the classic music sung by the generation of kids born in the late '90s. Not to mention the parents that know every word to every song of the "Enema of the State" album played repeatedly in their cars before we could drive. Songs like "What’s My Age Again?" and "First Date," are easily the modern sing-alongs that inspired us after the Disney Channel classics lost their touch.
Along with "Blink-182," many other bands, including "Weezer," "Sum 41," "Simple Plan" and "Smash Mouth" can get any group of people pumped to embark on their next adventure. Everyone ranging from elementary school children, to parents trying to keep up with their kids’ lives, begin to sing along to the catchy beat of a punk classic. With so much change taking place in our society, especially with the constantly adapting trends that seem to occupy all of our time, classic punk music remains a constant in the lives of a wide variety of ages.
Music is a great way to cope with whatever you are going through, and punk music unexpectedly conveys a lot more than it lets on. From letting out your anger to going crazy with your best friends in the car, there is a song for every mood.
This article is not meant to take away from classics of other genres that contributed to the best parts of our childhood; but rather, to remind you of one of the most underrated music genres of our time.
From a small kickback with your friends, to an insanely loud party on your college campus, punk throwbacks always seem to make an appearance. For one, a majority of the people around know the words (or at least, think they do), to most of the songs. Any song that a majority of people can sing along to with their best friends, automatically becomes a crowd favorite. A classic punk rock throwback can change an entire atmosphere from boring to exciting within the first 10 seconds of the intro.
