Three tech developments that mean fewer cars on the road

Every time somebody puts the key into the ignition of a car, lorry, or van that runs on either petrol or diesel, they are damaging the environment. Whether it's a long journey across the country or just popping to the shop down the road, every journey releases harmful carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere. The problem is so bad that experts say vehicles on the road collectively cause 75 percent of carbon monoxide pollution in the United States. The picture is pretty similar across the world. So how can we reduce the amount of damage these vehicles are causing to our environment? Here are three ways different industries are helping take vehicles off the road.

Smaller packaging

Many of the lorries on our roads are necessary to deliver goods from manufacturers to stores. Without them, stores' shelves would be empty and nobody would be able to get hold of vital goods like food and toiletries. The problem is that there are only so many products that you can fit into one van. That is unless you shrink the packaging they are in. Many companies are now beginning to reshape their products so they can fit higher quantities into every lorry. For example, Cadburys has reduced the size of its chocolate share bags without reducing the amount of product you receive. This means even more chocolate can be delivered per journey.

Entertainment at home

While many journeys might be essential, like commuting to work or going to buy groceries, many are purely for entertainment. Whether it's driving to the movie theater or to a theme park, every single journey still adds damaging emissions to the environment. Luckily, now many industries are offering alternatives that people can enjoy without having to travel anywhere to access them.

The casino industry is a great example of this. Previously, if you wanted to play a casino game, you would have had to travel to your nearest casino hall. Depending on where you live, the casino could have been many miles away. In 2020, you can now play the same games from the comfort of your own home. In fact, online casinos are so popular that more people are betting on virtual games around the world than at physical casinos. Websites like the casino Maria offer so many extra bonuses than real-life casinos, including free spins of their slot machines. That's something you'd struggle to find in any physical casino.

Bike power

Rather than going everywhere by car or van, many companies are now encouraging their delivery staff to travel by bike. For example, you've probably seen a lot of cyclists riding around with square rucksacks on their backs. They work for online fast-food providers like Deliveroo, which pick up food from a takeaway and deliver it to a customer's front door. These riders reduce the need for people to drive their cars to pick up a takeaway. Being on a bike means these riders can also often deliver food faster to people in busy city centers than if they were stuck in traffic in their car.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
