It's Convenient
An on-campus job is one of the most convenient positions to have while attending college because of its location and their ability to schedule your works hours around your classes. Since the job is on-campus, you would not have to worry about being late because of how far away it is. This may not be a problem if you are in a college town, but I've had plenty of instances here in New York where I am running late because the subway is delayed or other reasons. It's also a luxury that your work is right on campus, so once you finish you do not have to worry about commuting back to school. It's easy to transition from work to school and vice versa since they are both located on the campus.
Another great part about working on-campus is that those in charge are lenient with making your schedule and accommodate your hours to when you do not have class. The person in charge of the on-campus positions is generally more flexible assigning hours than someone working and understand that a student's education is their top priority and the job comes second. With certain internships and jobs off-campus, employers want workers for certain shifts, even if it at the same time as their class. On-campus positions are willing to assign hours that work for both the student and the program since they usually hire multiple people to work different shifts.
The Ability to Improve Your School's Community
One element of working on-campus that cannot be found working somewhere else is the ability to improve your college's community. Each position on campus has a different aspect that is meant to improve the community with the help of active students. When most people hear the term "on-campus job" they normally associate it with being a tour guide, but the behind-the-scenes positions should not be forgotten. I currently work for the call center as a Student Fundraiser asking alumni to donate financial gifts which go towards improving the school.Even though it's not the job that receives the most attention, it's essential in helping the university secure extra funding. The money raised can go towards areas such as renovations to specific departments or even scholarships. When I am working, I am motivated by the fact that my performance can lead to improvements in the school that I can take advantage of, such as the new labs built that teach students how to use Bloomberg Terminal. The majority of the funds used for this addition was alumni funding from callers, which showed that I could have a direct impact on the future of my college experience.
An Extra Source of Income
The reason why most students are interested in an on-campus position is because they are looking for a source of income. The reason why I wanted a job on-campus was to secure a paying position and have something to fall back on if I did not get an internship this semester. I viewed theStudent Fundraiser position as an opportunity to improve my resume and also have money to pay for groceries and other expenses. At my job, I receive a paycheck every two weeks and this has helped me learn how to handle my money better. This is a skill that I knew I would have to learn, and it's better to learn how to manage my money in one of the most expensive cities in the world so I can be prepared for managing my expenses once I get my first full-time position.
Certain positions on campus have tuition assistance programs which can provide up to $400 in a bonus that goes towards paying for college. The amount of assistance a student receives at the end of the semester is based on how many hours that person works, and the lowest amount a person can earn is $125. The only way for a student to receive the money is for them to choose a class that they believe can help them become a better worker and they have to earn at least a C. Since the worker is the one to pick the class, there should not be any reason why they do not receive the tuition assistance at the end of the semester.
