Really, why am I here?

Thoughts You Have While Taking A Class That Has Nothing To Do With Your Major

Okay, so we all know that in college we are required to take classes that literally have nothing to do with our majors. Those things that are the bane of our existence--"Degree Audits"-tell us what we are supposed to take in order to be a well educated individual. So if you want your degree, you gotta jump through some hoops to get it. When we're told this, we try and pick classes that seem alright. But we never really know how to feel about a class that seems to be completely useless until we are there in that seat for that Monday, Wednesday, Friday class time. Whether you're a freshman taking a random-ass ISEM that you see absolutely no point to, or a senior just taking classes you've avoided the past three years, to everyone in between--you know what I'm talking about. We've all been there. We've all thought the same things: "Why am I here?!"

Here is a list of thoughts that have ran through our minds while taking a class that has NOTHING to do with your major:

  • Okay, here I am taking a class I know nothing about--great.
  • I have literally never even heard of this building, let alone seen any of these people here.

  • Why did my adviser tell me to take "Geology 101" when I'm a social science major?
  • Real sciences and fake sciences don't really mix.
  • Oh yeah, because the university is trying to make us "well-rounded" individuals...right...
  • I know absolutely no one in here...

  • When is the professor going to get here?
  • Are all of these people experts on rocks?
  • Finally, the professor is here.
  • His opening line was literally, "This is a rock." Really?

  • I mean no offense to geology majors, but I really don't need to be able to identify various minerals for my next political science paper.
  • Three different kind of rocks--igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic? Seems simple enough.
  • Wait, this "Pangea" thing sounds pretty cool.

  • This class might actually be an okay time, just maybe.
  • If I squint my eyes and nod my head, maybe it'll look like I know what the professor is talking about...

  • Oh sh**, the professor is picking people to talk about something! Please don't call on me. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T.
  • Phew, someone who actually is a geology major answered.
  • What is she talking about? Who knows.
  • How come there is so much to learn about rocks?

  • A TEST ON WEDNESDAY? I'm not prepared for this.
  • I'm going to actually have to open my textbook for a 100 level class...
  • Do I even have that book? I should probably check...
  • Why am I here? What is life right now?
  • Ugh, I'm gonna fail. It's my fate. I've just got to accept it. After I cry a bit.
  • Why must this school hate me?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
