11 Thoughts You Have When College Gets Hard
Dr Help Spickett

Regardless of your major, your extracurricular commitments, and your threshold for sanity, college gets hard at times. We all handle stress differently. Some of us become burritos and watch Netflix until 3 AM, while some of us thrive under pressure. But we all seem to have these same thoughts running through our head.

1. “I was on the honor roll in middle school. How did this happen? When did I fall so far?” This is usually said at two in the morning when you’re on Facebook stalking your high school crush instead of studying for your quiz tomorrow.

2. “I can’t be the only person who is watching Netflix instead of typing this 12 page paper that's due tomorrow.” You say this as you watch your 10th episode of "House of Cards" that night while your unfinished paper sits untouched on your Google docs.

3. “At least my dogs will still love me if I fail my Econ class.” You’re not wrong here.

4. “Will my professor accept tears as extra credit on my final, because if not, I’m swinging by the ATM and grabbing a $20 on my way.” This probably brings about more tears as you realize you don’t have twenty dollars in the bank to bribe with.

5. “At this point, I’m closer to the time I need to wake up than the time I needed to go to bed, so I’m just going to power through and chug RedBull tomorrow." A statement made anywhere between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. that is usually regretted immediately tomorrow.

6. “I swear I’m not crazy, but…” Followed shortly after by a frantic search for your lost wallet, keys, cellphone, late assignment....

7. “Did you know that (insert odd job here) makes (insert large amount of money here)? I could do that! What am I doing in college?" This should be followed by a quick reminder that just because you could be a human statue, doesn’t mean that you should or can.

8. “Remember that time when I said everything was fine and I had it all under control? LOL. That was a good joke.” Pro tip: If you whisper this bitterly to yourself while in line at your school cafeteria, people might look at you like you’re crazy.

9. "Okay, so to get a B in this class, all I need to do is find those missing assignments and get a 110 percent on the final test. I got this." Shortly followed by the realization that short of a miracle, you won’t be getting a 110 on your final.

10. “This is really hard. Like, harder than I expected. I definitely did not sign up for this. Okay… I did, but I didn’t realize what I was signing up for.” Most likely said while nostalgically looking back on photos of elementary school camping trips and sleepovers.

11. “No matter how bad this gets, this can’t be worse than the time I waved at my middle school crush at the 7th grade dance and he didn’t wave back.” Especially because he was actually waving at your middle school frenemy who you know totally liked him.

While college can be hard, especially around this time of year, just remember that you aren't alone.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
