20 Thoughts You Have While Commuting To New York City

I'm in a New York state of mind...

20 Thoughts You Have While Commuting To New York City
123RF

I was never a big one for the city. To me, it was nothing but a crowded, dirty, sketchy area of America that smelled like 100 sewer lines backed up all at once. However, since I landed an internship in, you guessed it, the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, I have had to commute back and forth twice a week to New York.

However, after a few weeks of interning, I can officially say that I am now used to walking in the city and that the commute has become old hat to me. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have any snarky comments to make about commuting to the city…

1. Waiting at the bus stop isn’t fun… especially in the rain.

2. Getting catcalled by some sleazy truck drivers while waiting for the bus (this one isn’t even funny - it’s embarrassing and disgusting).

(Anyone remember this viral video?)

3. Finally getting on the bus and scrounging around to find a sat.

4. And of course, the bus driver takes off like a torpedo even though you are clearly trying to find a seat. I get that they’re on a tight schedule, but seriously, slow down Speedy McSpeed.

5. Or when the bus finally pulls up and the driver is like “Standing room only.”

6. Take my advice and wait for the next bus. Don’t make the same mistake I did one time and opt for the standing room only.

7. When you're sitting in an aisle seat and it's standing room only at that point and someone is standing next to you, butt to face.

8. The only thing you can do about this unfortunate situation is pray that they don’t fart.

9. When you finally arrive at the bus terminal and everybody starts pushing and shoving to get off the bus like it's a giant football game.

10. The unspoken rule that the escalator is divided in half. The right side stands for "I'm lazy and don't feel like walking," and the left side stands for "Get the f*** out of my way!"

11. The line for the coffee shop always seems to stretch across America.

12. And of course it's only on the days when you are either running late or desperately need that extra morning pick me up.

13. Being convinced that your maniac of a cab driver is out to kill you and that you're going to die before you reach your destination.

(Seriously, this is not a game of "Crazy Taxi!" My life is at stake here!)

14. Or if you walk, being convinced that you are going to get hit by said maniac cab driver or get pushed over by a fellow commuter.

15. Doing the half walk/half run while traveling in the streets.

(Sometimes I wonder if I could pass as a professional jogger.)

16. No, sorry, I don't have any cash. Please don't beg me for any (I know that sounds harsh, but if I have to give to you, I have to give to everyone. And I can't afford that).

17. When you finally arrive at your workplace and you're sweaty and disgusting from the New York humidity and from running.

18. Having to walk through the mean streets of New York again after a long day, and every little noise and person pisses you off for some reason.

19. On the bus ride home when it smells like people forgot the concept of deodorant. Seriously, you all need a shower.

20. Yet you secretly love the commute and can't wait to do it again the next time.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
