Sleep is maybe one of the most important parts of being a functioning human being. If you get a good nights sleep, you might actually be able to make it through the day. However, falling asleep can be a whole other problem. You could finally get in bed and turn off Netflix at a reasonable time, but your brain decides it is time to contemplate the universe or remember that super embarrassing thing you did.
1. Any and every embarrassing encounter of the day
The night time is a good time for reflection, however, when I am trying to fall asleep my brain seems to always want to remind me of every embarrassing thing that happened that day. My mind likes to replay them in my mind like a documentary of my embarrassing moments for that day.
2. The greatest comeback to the argument you had earlier
If I have an argument with someone that day and I do not get the last word in, it seems to come to me right before I fall asleep. I will think up the perfect comeback or argument point but now it is too late. So then I play out what the argument could have gone like had I said that thing at the time. While I may not have fallen asleep, I did win a riveting imaginary argument.
3. That important conversation you have tomorrow
I know for me the night before any confrontational or just important conversation I end up lying in bed rehearsing how the conversation could go. I try to prepare for any and all possible points they could say and craft the perfect answers in my head. But then I stay up way too late on my imaginary conversation that I am too tired to remember any of my seemingly amazing points the next day.
4. The process of falling asleep
Sometimes I know I need to fall asleep so I think about being asleep. However, the act of being asleep is an unconscious one, so my conscious mind cannot think of what it is like to be unconscious. My mind continues to contemplate what it is like to be unconscious and I find myself more awake than when I was before.
5. The unexplainable, unfathomable infinity of the universe
It has happened multiple times where my mind is wandering and will come to think about the universe. My brain tries to imagine what the edge of the universe looks like, but it is infinite. Therefore, it is never ending and has no edge. Then I proceed to contemplate my existence as a tiny lifeform in the never-ending void of space. Once again, I can come to no real conclusion except that I am again more awake than I was before.
6. What you would be like as the main character of that movie you just saw
If it is the night after seeing a movie, or I just have a movie plot in my mind I might imagine what it would be like if I were a Jedi in “Star Wars” or a superhero in a “Marvel” movie. Then my mind wanders off to this imaginary world where I have a lightsaber and the force.
7. A horror film villain being in your room
My mom and I have watched all the “Paranormal Activity” movies, so sometimes right before I fall asleep, my brain decides it is a good time to remind me of the multiple characters who are dragged out of their beds and down the halls in the middle of the night. My mind will then continue to run through all known horror film scenes involving a person being abducted, killed, or dragged away while asleep.
