Move in day. The day we have all been anticipating ever since we recieved our acceptance letter in the mail. The day we have been planning for, and shopping for, the last couple of months. However, whether you will admit it or not, you are probably pretty nervous for it as well. College is a huge adjustment. Moving into college is going to be scary, but know you are not in it alone. Every other freshman moving away from home is thinking the exact same thing!
1. How am I going to share a room with another person?
If you did not grow up with having to share a room with a sibling or family member, sharing a room is a VERY big deal. You are used to having your own space, where you can escape to when you need to unwind. You are used to having a whole closet to yourself. In some cases, you are even used to having a bathroom to yourself. Sharing a room, in and of itself is a big adjustment, and that doesn't even include everything else that college includes.
2. Is College going to be too difficult?
"You can do anything you set your mind to." Does this sound familiar? Growing up, my mom always reminded me of this quote, when I was stressing over a big test at school or something that had to be done at work. Don't let the difficulty of your major determine your future. One of my all time favorite verses is Philippians 4:13 which says, " I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength." Remember that when it comes time for your next big test. Remember that when you feel like you have put in all you got. Remember that when you feel like giving up. You are not in this alone!
3. How am I going to make new friends?
A lot of us have been in the same place the majority, if not all, our lives. The thought of leaving all your friends and going to a new place is super scary. The thought of meeting new people, for some of us, can also be super scary. However, it is important to get involved, meet new people, and make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
4. Am I going to be okay, financially?
Money is a big factor in most of our lives. It determines where you live, what you do, what you eat, and even what you wear. Many of us are worried about whether we will have to work, or if our parents will still give us an allowance. Working while being a full time student can also be very stressful. You need to find your balance. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Do not forget to always put school first.
5. Is the college that I am at safe?
We have all heard the terror stories about the things that have happened to college students while they were away at school. It is scary being away from home, where you can't constantly rely on your parents protection. However most colleges have security on campus, and remember, the buddy system exists for a reason.
6. I can do whatever I want!
For most students, college is the first opportunity to be independent and on your own. Most college freshmen like this idea because they like the idea of freedom. However don't forget that most colleges have some sort of rules in place.
7. Is the freshman 15 really a thing?
The "Freshman 15" is a very well known concept that many people like to joke about. However this concept also scares a bunch of us as well. We all like to think that we will always have the same body type forever. Some will be lucky and have a consistent body type their whole life, but the reality for most of us, is that we will change. Although this is well known, it does not mean it has to be true for you. You have control over your own body. You can make a choice to take care of your body, or you can make a choice to eat whatever you want. That decision is up to you!
8. I'm so excited!!!!!
Lastly, no matter how many emotions are running through our minds, most of us can honestly say that we are excited for the next chapter of our lives. We are excited for the things we will do, the people we will meet, and the things we will learn. So don't let this time pass you by, because these years will be some of the best years of your life.
