Summer jobs can be a lot of fun, but most times, they could be so much better.
I've been working my job since I was sixteen and as much as I love it, I sometimes hate it even more. Unlike most of my friends who work their summers in stores or other "structured" jobs, I spend my summers selling french fries at sporting events, carnivals, street fairs, and concerts. My job has plenty of perks (like free fries) but there are plenty of things about working a food truck that are far from easy.
Here's 11 thoughts every food truck worker has in the summer:
1. "I think I'm having a heat stroke."
Summer jobs come with summer heat and it doesn't matter what kind of food you're selling. Ninety degree weather when you're working outside isn't good for anyone.
2. "When's intermission? I'm bored."
Some people only buy food during breaks so you have nothing to do in the middle because no one's buying and you can't see what's going on anyway.
3. "Why don't they cancel for rain?"
Sure, rain cancels a lot of outdoor events, but there are plenty of times when nothing could end it, so you spend your day mopping rain off your table or counter and just trying to stay dry for the customers who probably aren't going to come anyway.
4. "Why is everyone here so mean?"
Everyone knows the worst part of working customer service is the customers. Just like any other job, you never know what kind of people you're going to meet in concessions. From crazy soccer moms with eight kids, to amish people on their night out, to red necks, and the homeless. I've literally seen it all and it isn't always pretty.
5. "When is this rush gonna end? I'm dying."
As terrible as having nothing to do is, it's even worse to go from nothing to a never ending line. There's nothing like turning around and seeing the entire marching band in line for food.
6. "Why don't we have air conditioning in this thing?"
Seriously. It gets way too hot in there sometimes.
7. "Someone make these people go home!"
Big events call for big lines and sometimes they don't end until the end of the night. There's nothing more exhausting than selling food nonstop for hours and hours at a time with no break.
8. "I'm going to smell so bad by the time I get home."
Whether you're selling fries, pizza, funnel cake, or ice cream, you're going to come home smelling like a strange mix or sweat and your product. The smell doesn't come out easy either, so you've completely donated certain clothes to the cause.
9. "Did they really just ask me that?"
"Do you sell (insert whatever the only thing on the menu is)?"
10. "Are we sure this event already started?"
The only thing worse than being incredibly busy is sitting around, twiddling your thumbs and staring at each other because you haven't seen a customer in hours.
11. "Did my tip jar turn invisible?"
Because sometimes you've had a line nonstop for three hours and the only thing in the tip jar is $3.21 and a straw wrapper.
