Thoughts Everyone Has While Packing For College

As an incoming college freshman, I have begun the packing experience. It is more than just a chore, but to me, it seems like a whole entire nostalgic ordeal, taking my entire life and putting it into boxes. When I started packing, I didn't expect it to get this hard. It started out fun, looking on Pinterest for cute comforters and adorable DIYs. Then I purchased my bedding. Then felt like I filled an entire UPS truck with an Amazon order filled with plastic storage bins. And now, I am putting things into boxes and going through clothes and throwing things out...

So, here are the thoughts I had during this ordeal, and know that you are not alone in this.

1. "Who's t-shirt even is this????"

I say as I then proceed to fold the comfy t-shirt, put it in my suitcase, and disregard who the original owner may be.

2. "I remember this!!!"

I got this t-shirt in the third grade. Somehow it still fits me and I am pretty sure I am a foot taller...

3. "Will I want this next year?"

I mean, I haven't worn it in 7 months, but there may be some occasion when I want it... Should I bring it??? Yes, I will. And then after it sits at the bottom of the drawer for the entire year, I will ask myself the same question about the same article of clothing next year.

4."That's where this went!!!"

I say as I pick my white bikini bottoms out from between a bin and the wall. I am not sure how they got here...

5. "Do I have too much tie-dye?"

I have about 12 tie-dyed items from my days at sleep-away camp. But... you can not have too much tie-dye.

6. "Are footie pajamas still cool in college?"

Yes.

Well...I hope... I was never very good at being "one of the cool kids" anyway.

7. "Does my stuffed bear match my aesthetic?"

Probably not.

8. "Is bringing a stuffed animal to college weird??"

Probably yes.

9. "Am I bringing Smokey the Bear with me???"

Absolutely. Again, never a cool kid.

10. "Is this too much stuff???"

No... Never too much. What is too much???

11. "Maybe I have an issue..."

I do I have a birthday card from the 6th grade... and why is a blouse I grew out of years ago still in my drawer... and why did I even want to keep most of this stuff...

12. "My roomie is the greatest human being ever and I am so excited to live with her!!!!!"

She is one of the best human beings ever and always reads my articles so when she reads this I hope she sees this.

13. "CAN I BRING MY DOG WITH ME???"

The guidelines said no... but...

Well... Now I must go back to packing... but I will leave you with one last thing...

"WHEN WILL IT EVER END???"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
