Thoughts During A Road Trip By Yourself

Long road trips alone can lead to a lot of thoughts, but here are a few universal ones!

Thoughts During A Road Trip By Yourself

With the upcoming fall semester near approaching, road trip season is ending and is going out with a big splash. To the college student who drives by himself or herself back to their University of choice, this means a road trip ALONE. Anyone who drives alone knows thoughts that can accompany the long road trip.

1. I am nowhere near ready.

This thought usually occurs the day or two before when you realize that you have yet to pack most of your things and the to-do list that you made at the beginning of the summer still has a few items that are not checked off still.

2. Let's do this!

You are now ready to become one with the open road. This stage is usually the night before the trip begins when you are pumped to get out of your parent's house and back to school.

3. Why am I up this early?

If your road trip begins early in the morning and you are the one driving, you probably have increased your coffee intake and regret planning the road trip to begin this early.

4. This isn't so bad.

Within the first hour, this thought will float into your mind. Don't worry, it will go away.

5. Is it too early to go to the bathroom?

After your cups of coffee earlier this morning, your bladder is uncomfortably full, but you have not been on the road for that long. Maybe you should wait. (For your body's sake, just take the next exit.)

6. I am halfway there...but am I going to make it?

Depending on how long your trip is, the half way point can mark a lot of things, but either way, half way is half way. Let the countdown begin (no, seriously, let the countdown begin because I am slowly losing energy).

7. I wish someone was here with me.

Making long trips alone can be very, well, lonely. There is no one to jam with, talk to, or even yell at when they start to correct your driving.

8. Only _____ to go!

When the countdown starts, you know your patience is going out the window.

9. I HATE this stretch of road.

There is always one section of a trip that you hate. It's usually between "I am halfway there" and "I probably should have consumed more caffeine".

10. I could really use a nap.

Please. My eye lids are drooping, but I have to push on and I am ready for a nap.

11. I am here! Finally!

Please excuse me while I go sleep for hours upon hours now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
