Dear Those Who Live In My Apartment After Me,
Living off campus is one of the most exciting things about being an upperclassman in college. Although dorm life is fun in the beginning, there is nothing like getting the key to your very own apartment. It might not have been the fanciest, newest, or most upscale complex on the block, but my apartment was my own. It was the place that I called home for nine months and now it is yours. I hope that it treats you just as well as it did me.
The ventilation system is the loudest thing that you will ever hear. You have to flip a switch to turn the dishwasher on and sometimes the key gets stuck in the lock, but there’s no place in the world like our apartment. I have made some of my best memories here and so will you. The inside is cute and quaint. It was decorated so well HGTV would have been proud to hire me. Please don’t mind the mismatched furniture or tacky 1970s carpeting. That kind of stuff just doesn’t seem to matter as much as the memories that you will make here.
These walls hold my secrets and have heard my laughter. Just like you soon will, I have spent countless hours writing papers at that kitchen table and have stumbled my way through the living room after many rowdy Friday nights on the town. This apartment has had more of an effect on me than you’d think. It’s where I learned how to be a grown-up. Due to my time here, I have gained independence, learned responsibility and experienced what it is like to be an adult. This is the place where I’ve had some of my best and worst days, but, most importantly, it’s the place where my roommates and I have had the times of our lives.
I hold this apartment near and dear to my heart, so please take care of it. Respect it and love it because, after all, it is yours now. Over the nine months that you live here, this place will become more than just an apartment to you. It will become your home and, just like me, every time you pass apartment 11 a flood of memories will come rushing back to you. You are lucky to have the opportunity to live here and the days you will spend in this place will be some of your greatest ones.
Before you go and kick yourself for not having that posh apartment that was featured on "House Hunters," just remember that you never get this experience back. Love those broken mini-blinds and embrace that floral-print couch! You won’t be here forever and, when it’s time to say goodbye, you will miss this place. This was once my home too and I hope you love and enjoy it as much as I have.
Sincerely,
The Former Tenant
