First off, if you’re reading this and have your life together—congratulations! I hope you have a meaningful life that makes you sing in the shower endlessly!
On the other hand, if you’re reading this and you’re not quite sure what you want to do with your life, I’m just like you. What should we do? Should we be astronauts? Musicians? Sugar daddies? Should we quit school and search for utopia? The world is ours and this article is dedicated to us.
I’d like to start with the following: sometimes I feel like a kite in a tornado. In case this horrible analogy isn’t clear, I don’t know where life is going to take me. But, you know what? That kite in the tornado is not just any kite. That kite is happy and having a good ass time. That kite is taking flight in the wind and is as free as can be.
Thus, if you’re a kite in a tornado: take flight.
I hate when people look negatively at us (kites) because we do not have a distinct life plan. Excuse me? We have infinite capabilities. We can do anything we want with our lives. I’m not 100% sure what my future job field is or the exact location of my future house, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. So, next time someone asks “What do you want to be when you grow up?” respond confidently, “I don’t know.” Or, “A kite.” It’s okay for them to be jealous.
The important point, coming from my “I don’t know what I’m doing with life” perspective, is that we are not restricting ourselves. I would rather be free and full of potential in our future, than cooped up in a boring career path that I will soon regret. That kite can travel anywhere it wants and it is happy doing so.
There isn’t any rules when you live like a kite in a tornado. You don’t have to “pass Go 3 times!” or go to law school for eight years. If one day I decide to go to law school and/or “pass Go 3 times,” I will, but I’m not worried about it yet. I’m a free kite. And, like a kite follows the wind, I follow my passions (I am the queen of horrible analogies).
Passions. Art, business, sports, writing, the list goes on. We all know our own passions and must stick with them. Our “I don’t know what I’m doing with my life” lifestyle has so much room for passions. I know my passions and focus on them everyday. That kite knows it doesn’t want to get stuck in telephone wires; our passions give us direction.
So, fellow kites. We’re unstoppable. Our potential is unrestrained. And, let’s soar.
