As I looked around the room that I had just walked into, I realized that none of them belonged in my class that was supposed to be happening in about ten minutes. In fact, there were some people that I didn't recognize at all. I realized that I had to get out, and quickly, because when I walked in, the speaker stopped talking to look over and see why the door just flew open. Of course, for the first few seconds, I had to stare open-mouthed at all of the stranger, professors, and, yes, the camera people. Once I regained my bearings, I tried to back out of the room as quietly as I could. I should have realized that the door would already be closing. But I didn't, so as I tried to back out, the door was already halfway closed. There was enough room for me to start leaving, but not to get all of the way out. My arms were already squeezed between the door and the frame, so I had no way to push the door the rest of the way open. This made the already awkward situation even more awkward. The speaker, who was apparently better at recovering than I was, had already started speaking again, and I, unable to use my arms, had to wiggle myself out of the room. It was, quite possibly, the loudest way I could have possibly attempted to leave.
After I made it out, I had to wait in the hallway for the talk to be over. After it finished, I had to watch all of the people that had seen me embarrass myself walk by. Having noticed the obvious interruption, one guy even decided to let me know that they were finished in there.
With a quiet thank you, that I'm not even sure he heard, I hurried into the room. The camera people were just finishing packing up, and there were a few stragglers that felt the need to chat in the room for a bit. They finally all filed out and I prayed that when I entered the camera people didn't turn and get my intrusion permanently on film. After they had all left, and I gained the courage to lift my head up and look around, I realized that some of my classmates had actually made it in the room before me. Somehow, between the time of my intrusion, and the time I reentered, they managed to slip in, without making a scene, a skill that I probably need to work on. Luckily, none of them had actually experienced the incident, so I was able to sit through class with the false sense of dignity that I am somehow always able to muster up after embarrassments such as this.
