Recently, Sia released "This is Acting" which is an album unlike others that she has worked on in the past. Where other albums are filled with ballads involving her past drug use and depression, this album is a pop blend that is easier to dance to. While reviewers have been tearing the album apart for the different direction that Sia decided to take, there is a charm to what is being done with the album.
The album at its base is an experiment. Sia didn't write all of these songs for herself to put on an album, they were all songs that were written for other people. A-list musicians turned down these songs and Sia, knowing that her music was well written and wanting it to be heard, released an album full of music that was meant for others. This is why reviewers have problems with the album. They don't like that it isn't what is traditionally expected of Sia.
While the album does sound different, there is a fun in trying to guess which singer was supposed to perform her songs.
"Alive" was co-written with Adele and was meant to be on "25," but when Adele decided that it didn't fit, Sia happily took it. Other singers that have been mentioned to have turned down songs on the album are Rihanna, Shakira, Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Demi Lovato. So with that, it's clear that either way Sia planned on making money off of these songs.
While Sia is clearly a talented singer, her real skill lies in songwriting. She has been writing songs since before she began her singing career which started two decades ago. The songs on "This is Acting" are all solid lyrically and rhythmically, and while Sia sounds slightly different in each track, there is no shame to what she is doing. She knows that her writing is strong, so when she backs it up with her singing, she is sure to find success.
So while, "This is Acting" is getting mediocre reviews from the critics, give it a listen and find the songs that you find interesting, because there is a little something for almost everybody in the album.
