We are all told we are unique.
From the earliest days of kindergarten to the final days of graduation we hear we are special. Although, how many of us can truly say we are unique if everyone is? If we are all different doesn't our uniform uniqueness make us all the same? No probable not but it's an idea. Everyone is special, however, how do we stand out. I think there are three ways:
First of all think for yourself. It is so easy to go with what we are told but so often we are told the wrong things. The Fox News and MSNBCs of this world are diametrically opposed so someone has to be wrong. Therefore think for yourself. This means doing the homework necessary to be the person who truly knows what they are saying. Take notes from the authors that inspire you because these people are deep thinkers who truly make a difference in the way people think. If you learn this skill you'll move from a follower to a revolutionary thinker that people look toward. That doesn't mean everyone will look to you as the next great expert but it does mean in your group of friends you will be seen as a person to go to for knowledge.
Second remember to empathize. Seeing other people's points of view is vital. Learn as much as you can about the other side before you give your opinion. You can't have a conversation with someone without first knowing what they are talking about. It'd be like speaking to someone in a foreign language. Thus, take notice of what others say and you may be surprised if you keep an open mind to what you'll discover in someone else's idea.
Third and final listen more than you speak. We are often quick to offer our ideas before we hear others. Stay humble that you don't know everything and learn from those that claim to. You will find that true genius is found by taking from others and weaving it together in your own mind with your own thoughts. People who hear are the people who learn. When they speak they have something to say. Be one of these people because talk is cheap the more you do it. It is like inflation. The more you say the less it means. Therefore, listen, learn, and share when needed.
With these three core ideas you'll think in unique ways. Think for yourself, empathize, and listen and you'll find what it means to be special in a world of cluttered ideas and backwards thoughts. Stand out with your own commentary but back it with the facts you will acquire from others. With all of that in mind you will be set to think differently.
