Things You Only Understand If You Went To UWA

"There's something about this place."

Things You Only Understand If You Went To UWA
UWA

Everyone who goes to or has gone to UWA has heard over and over, "There is something about this place." Now, of course, we all have our own opinions and we get to decide what that "something" is. There are things about every single campus that make it special to each person. Whether it's the beautiful covered bridge or the delicious Touch of Home Bakery, we all have found our "something" in Livingston. These are just a couple of our favorite things about the wonderful, the awesome, University of West Alabama.

Fried Chicken Wednesday

The only day it's acceptable to wait in a line for 30+ minutes for food. We pretty much worship Fried Chicken Wednesday.

The Covered Bridge

The best view on campus. We cherish this little bridge.

Local Restaurants

Whether your favorite is Don's, Diamond Jim's, or Austin's we have the most awesome local restaurants around. And the food is worth the wait. Or the drive.

The Painted Bridge

Everyone who attends UWA makes it their goal to leave their mark at the painted bridge.

The Bakery

Everything served at the Bakery is sent straight from heaven. I promise you. Taco salad Thursday truly is every college kid's dream.

Rain!

Sorry Luke Bryan, Rain is not a good "thang". You can walk into a building at 11 a.m., and it's sunny and 75, then you walk out at 11:03 a.m., and you need a boat to get across campus.

You can travel the world in less than 20 miles.

We have India and Mexico about four minutes from Campus. We have China about two minutes from campus. You can drive to Utah (Eutaw) in less than 20 minutes.

Our fields

So we have a really really awesome looking football field, which is also the band's field, which is also the soccer field. Wait! That's not all, I swear the other day I also saw the baseball players on the field.

The Family

It's standing by a friend, classmate, or teammate as they fight a disease.

It's joining together to support a platform and mourn the loss of a friend.

It is so hard for outsiders to understand the close bond between every single student here. We have become a family. We enjoy these things as a family. We fight as a family. We mourn as a family. At UWA, we are a family.

All these things make UWA home to each and every one of us. We all love it as much as we hate it. We complain about the long wait on Fried Chicken Wednesday and the small town life, but where would we be without it? Whatever your "something" is embrace it, love it, and if it's food, then eat it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
