9 Things You Miss When You're In College

When you're a senior in high school, all you can think about is how you can't wait to get out of there and get to college.

Here are just a few things you might miss when you actually get here:

1. Your 'school' friends

You know the friends I'm talking about, right? The friends that you have classes and conversations with in high school but never actually hangout with outside of school? Yeah, you're going to miss them a lot. You were more than acquaintances but not close enough to talk after you graduate or keep up with.

2. Homework points

Don't get me wrong, homework sucks. But when you have only have 1 paper and 3 exams making up your entire grade, part of you really wishes you had those easy homework points to bring up your grade. Sure, some professors will give you points for homework, but a lot of them don't.

3. Pets

In high school, when you had a bad day you could just go home and let your pet comfort you. When you go off to college, you come back to an empty dorm room. At least you can have your parents or siblings send you pictures on the daily, or even sneak in a phone call or FaceTime.

4. Home Cooked Meals

Even if you were never a fan of your parents' cooking, you'll miss it. There's nothing like the first week of college food - you know, the week when the dining hall actually tries to make their food appetizing. After that, it's just downhill. Sure, there's some good things here and there but at the end of the day, it's no home cooked meal.

5. Your shower

There is nothing better than going home for break and getting to shower in your own bathroom. After spending a semester showering in communal bathrooms, your own shower is paradise. It's amazing to not have to wear shoes in the shower.

6. Your car

Or your friend's car, if you don't have one. If you live on a campus where the freshmen can have cars, good for you; that's great. However, a lot of campuses don't allow freshmen to have cars. Specifically, urban campuses. You know, sometimes I just want the freedom of being able to get in my car and drive to WaWa or Target. You get so used to the freedom of being able to drive when you're at home, and then suddenly you're at school where you have to walk everywhere.

7. Your bed

College mattresses are the most uncomfortable things ever. Even with a mattress pad, I can't get comfortable. My bed here at college is tiny and uncomfortable and I just want my nice comfy bed.

8. Siblings/Family

They drive you nuts when you live with them year round, but once you're off at college, you actually kind of miss them a bit.

9. Not having to do laundry

I already knew how to do laundry before coming to college, but it surprised me how many people I met here that have never done it. While I know how to do laundry, I still hate it. At home, it was easy because all I had to do was put the dirty clothes into the basket and then my mom would take care of the rest.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
