19 Things I've Learned About Life As I Begin My 19th Year On This Planet
Haiden VanDerlaske

Birthday's are a weird thing.

To some people, it is just another day, a place marker to say, "Hey! Look, I've been alive on this planet for another whole year, yay!" To others, it is the best part of the year, celebrating for more than just the

In the 19 years that I have been alive, I have experienced a lot. I've experienced things that most 19-year-olds haven't, but you know, it is something that I wouldn't trade in for the world.

Here are 19 things I've learned in my 19 years on this earth:

1. You make your own happiness

Just because someone makes you happy for a little while doesn't mean you can't be happy without them.

2. Family matters most

Losing family members is always tough, make sure you always tell your family that you love them and appreciate them.

3. It's okay to lose friends

You can find your best friend at any moment. It doesn't matter if you've known them since kindergarten, find a friend who will grow with you and push you to do your best.

4. Take care of yourself

You only got one you, take care of it. Your mental health and well-being is 100% more important than anything else.

5. Do things for yourself

Just because your friend is doing it doesn't mean you have to. Be your own person and do things you want to do because YOU want to.

6. Cherish the little things

A flower bloomed outside? Take a picture! You found a penny head side up? Make a wish! Someone tell you that you look nice? Be thankful.

7. Smile often

It'll brighten up your day and someone elses. Just do it.

8. Journal

Make sure you write things down. You think you will remember this exact day and how you feel but you won't. Reading what you write down in years will make things matter. Sidenote: It is also a great way to relieve stress and to get all your feelings out onto paper.

9. Be silly

Whether it be wearing a funny outfit, or making silly faces in the mirror. Add a little joy to your day by reminding yourself it is okay to be silly

10. Take advantage of opportunities

You never know what is going to happen, take advantage of the things that come at you. It might only happen once.

11. It's okay to not know

Got an A on a paper? Didn't cry today? Take time to celebrate, even the little things.

16. Driving

Everyone wants to get their licenses and own a car when they are 16, but it's okay if you don't pass your test right away. It is something that is always going to be there unless the robots take over.

17. Dancing Queen

You're 17! Dancing queen! Be yourself, dance like no one is watching. What matters most is that you like it. Be creative, do that weird move with your arms or twirl like a ballerina.

18. Legally Legal

Just because you're legally an adult now doesn't mean you have to be. Still watch Disney movies and eat the dino chicken nuggets. Don't grow up too fast, don't be an adult until you have to.

19. Be you

There is only one of you. Don't let imposter syndrome take over. Be who you want to be, do what you want to do and just be you. Be real, be true.

In 19 years you can learn a lot about life, but it is most important to learn about yourself. You got this. Birthdays should be a time to celebrate, to congratulate yourself because you made it this far. Wish yourself a good day and an even better year, it's gonna be a good one.

Happy birthday, Haiden.

Love, Haiden.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
